Forgot to mention before ...while you don't need the active CFI cert at all, it would be helpful if you ever apply to be a check-airman, and will also add to your total score on many major airline's computer application systems. For that reason, you might consider re-instating those ratings by re-taking the CFII checkride (which will re-instate all your ratings) as your path to currency. But don't fail it, that will do more harm than not having it.

Having BTDT I think you will find times have changed a lot since you left. The CFI reinstatement is totally unnecessary if you have previous 121 experience. Currency is pretty much a non issue these days this is definitely not 2003. You are one of those elusive "woodwork" pilots we often refer to in discussions about the pilot shortage. It's people like you they are going to have to convince to get back in the game in the future. Best of luck.

Rickair, Jubshep, & 121again,
I really appreciate the feedback and encouragement. Thank you.
Next question….Can anyone in the Forum help me sell this to my wife?
She IS supportive and open to my return, I just need a little help in the close.
Looking for career projections (your Chrystal Ball):
What do you think the next 5-10 years will look like? How about after that?
Lots of conjecture already on this forum, but what about for someone, 38 years old with a young family?
I really appreciate the feedback and encouragement. Thank you.

You have 23 years left before mandatory retirement. You will be returning to an industry on the cusp of unprecedented hiring. It is difficult to predict based on the regional airline you eventually join, but with the hiring at the majors alone over the next 10-15 years, I would bet that you would be left seat at the regional level in 3-5 years and approaching (or exceeding) a 6 figure salary. Depending what you want out of an airline career, the majors are not out of reach for you either.
Bottom line though, the wife needs to be on-board. A supporting wife is one of the unsung factors in a successful airline career.
Good Luck

rickair7777, TallFlyer,
Thank you for taking the time to help me out. Very encouraging. Once current, I will definitely get some FTD time.
I am in Atlanta. ExpressJet would be the best for me in regards to domiciles. I hope they would consider someone in my situation?

A friend of mine went to training at XJT last summer. He said that there was a guy in his class who showed up and they told him that had no record of having ever hired him. After looking at his record they let him stay. That's how hard up they are. So yes, you have a definite shot.
For reasons very similar to the OP, I have also considered going back to flying. Though a complex decision, here are three factors that weigh heavily: low pay, the uncertainty of career advancement (due to consolidations and/or macro economic conditions), and the requirement to spend a great deal of time away from my family. (FWIW, my age and family situation are very similar to the OP.)
