And don’t forget the additional folks as crew. A lot like herding cats (see commercial from long ago) which is a time waster all by itself. The biggest pain is having to get too the bathroom a debacle all by itself but that’s just me…

If you have transportation available to you, they also make allowances for you to leave the airport for a short time to get food.
And for the sake of even more accuracy...ABX has no plans to discontinue the R1 hotel rooms or the commuter hotel rooms even after Covid is over at this time. They have realized that is just one of the many things that are going to be needed going forward to continue hiring. Not to say they won't make a horrible decision at some point and do just that, they are management after all.

In addition, sorry to say this, but ABX isn’t a Delta or United. If you have the study mind set AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, THE SKILL SET, go to a wholly owned or at least somewhere with a flow or Aviate, build your hours and go to a major. A lot of people get stuck on the 121 supplemental flying and never get off.

Right now is an amazing time and it won’t last forever so go grab a seat where you’ll be happy for a few years. Get passes and travel and enjoy the bonuses while they last. Find a decent regional with AQP and enjoy flying during the day. COMMUTING SUCKS.

If you’ve never been to CVG, and in the middle of the night, you should go see what your getting into. ABX has hot CVG reserve where you get to sit at the airport in the middle of the night waiting for the phone to go off. That hub is like going to a Quiet Riot concert AND you hope you never get runned over by the most insane drivers you’ve ever seen. Then there’s the van driver who is blasting his music at levels you can’t imagine at 2am. It will ware on you in a hurry I promise and that’s like 90% of the flying. THERE IS NO STARBUCKS AT THE DHL HUB CVG!

Enjoy your time off now and wait for that regional while applying to others. You will soon be drinking from a fire hose and studying like back in college cramming for the finals. Stay away from the 121 supplental charter world, it’s just awful. Stay on your own time zone, fly during the day and NEVER HAVE LOOK AT A NOTOC WHERE YOUR CONVINCED YOU’RE GOING TO BLOW UP.

All the best. Now here it comes!
So....BDC8 made it sound quite a bit worse than it is IMHO. Just like anything else it is what you make of it.
Many do come to ACMI and love it after flying pax and hating it. But....1500 hr CFI would be a stretch to get through training IMHO. Has it been done? Probably, but I would not relish the job of being the Ck Airman tasked with training someone at that level.

Some of this will soon enough be a moot point (IMO). I've stated it before, and now once again. ABX will loose their 6 762's that are operating in the AMZ system.....it may take a year or two for the total change to occur. My money says it will begin next year right as Hawaiian gets 330's on-line and AMZ realigns their network. I doubt there's a need to redeploy (DHL) those airframes within ABX. Upgrades/newhiring will dwindle to covering retirements and resignations.

I think those Amazon 762s will stay leased to Amazon and operated by ABX for the forseeable future, unless/until they hit their LOV. That will arrive over the next several years for a couple of them, but the rest have some time. So the ones that leave will likely go one by one. I also think that ABX has the possibility of picking up more DHL work, like the 763 that just came over from Kalitta.

I apologize that I haven't looked at the cycles on the Amazon frames in a while. At 700-800 cycles per year on average in Amazon service, 5 of the 6 762s have a minimum of 3-4 years of service left, and most much more than that. The EXCEPTION is N795AX, which has about 8 or 9 months of service before it hits its LOV of 50,000 cycles. As you may know, ATSG has run a few of the 767-200 conversions all the way to the LOV (like N798AX). So it will be retired almost-certainly in the next year. But the rest have a while.

The most recent cycle numbers I have, are:

N744AX: 44774 (in June 2022)
N749AX: 39788 (in June 2022)
N750AX: 41412 (in October 2022)
N768AX: 47083 (in July 2022)
N774AX: 45669 (in September 2022)
N795AX: 49448 (in October 2022)

And just for grins, N740AX, an ABX-operated 762 which is not an Amazon lease, but which is Line Number 6, the lowest line number of any 767 still flying, has only about 44500 cycles right now, so she could conceivably fly for many more years.

795 was parked at its limit a couple weeks ago.

Oh, thanks for the knowledgeable reply!!

Looks like it still had about 500 cycles left as of last month per the latest SDRs, but perhaps there was required maintenance that wouldn't have been worth undertaking when only 500 cycles were left. Maintenance requirements, after all, are way more complicated than just, "Did we reach the LOV yet?" -- which was all I was looking at. I really appreciate your sharing the correct information.

Default Hiring

Currently hiring for classes in June, July and August.(Expecting 16 each)
Upgrades will resume in September after settle down the face out of the old 762's.
17 ATLAS- 76's in negotiation to move it into ABX certificate.
The end of the 3rd quarter seems brighter for ABX new future.

Considering there hasn’t been but 2 or 3 FO DOF trips available this year and upgrades came to a near standstill 4Q last year, I’m wondering how many candidates we actually need to attract? That is of course unless we actually pick up some new flying. The Atlas planes would be good news, if they actually make it on certificate. Fingers crossed things start moving again, as the CK birds didn’t seem to add as much flying as advertised.
