The Hartford is underwriting the pilots LTD at Atlas. Unfortunately it is NOT paying out! There are cases where pilots that have been out for over 9 months without any benefit being paid. They make you file for social security benefits as well as any state benefits. In the meantime they withhold benefits and will not allow the crewmembers effected to deal with anyone who can make a decision. Expect foriegn call centers with customer service people who barely speak english that don't get back to you.

Everything is a waiting game and mirrors the government in many ways. Plenty of paperwork, proof required/medical assessments, etc., but retro pay back for waiting a few months is based upon your application dates with validation dates is key. Do not wait too long when filing and hopefully you have some sick days accrued prior to the event. Nothing required, just makes it easier so always do your computer based training early cuz ya never know when a few Benjamins helps
*There was something out there about emergency funds - not a bad idea while you wait.

Yes, they will make you apply for state disability and all that, and it will take a while to process those. But they will retro pay the months you missed when all that is done.
If a pilot doesn't have a Dave Ramsey-style 6 month emergency fund, now would be a good time to start saving for one, as we all are one trip and fall away from losing our jobs. Thankfully our LTD is now at a point where losing your medical is not financially destructive event.

Yeah, if I didn't make that clear. Unable to hold a 1st class med certificate is required proof. Agreed
*Those who undergo AME Assigned Special Issuance (AASI) understand what is required like myself. Just failing a fixable area may not entail the true inability to hold your license. There are limitations and if you have faced a grounding event aside from the obvious career killers the FAA is a hoop in itself. I am quite well versed on some ailments and suppression attempts that will keep someone out of the blue (sky). Just my observation/experience.

It's not fearmongering if its the truth. If crew members that had to fight for the benefits owed to them were incapacitated durng that period and had to rely on their spouse, They would have lost everything. The process needs to be improved going forward.

And it has. Atlas now has a dedicated person for claims at Hartford who understands our system.
