Consider this: you bid pay only just about every month (flex) and your manager doesn't allow you to bid carryover because there isn't enough work to support it. You have no ability to drop work days to obtain some make up time. Sometimes you need to bump trips to maintain proficiency. Makes everybody's day. But, every once in a while a nice 6 hour trip pops up and you have a day or two off and would like to take the trip and actually get paid for it. Without that "free" 6 hours of makeup there is no way for you to do so.
I don't think one 6 hour trip per month (when out of general makeup) is too much to ask, especially when some guys can bid 30 hours of carryover every month and then dump it into their makeup bank by protecting min days off.

The ability of 4700 to pick up a 6 hour trip EVERY month regardless of bank total is a huge detriment to the staffing levels and OT availability. The purpose of the 6 hour buffer should be to allow flexibility in picking up a MU trip that is slightly higher than your bank (in my opinion of course). I am sure the company fully intended it to work the way it has, guys covering more time a straight pay !

You guys are both correct, but the ability for the company to build 20-25% extra flying each month at straight time (carry over) is a much bigger issue than the rest of the guys getting a shot at 6 extra per month. Everything is a trade off, I could fly the line and bid carryover if I wanted to really make more money. Since I can't bid for carryover, it is nice to be able to pick up a trip once in a while and get paid for it.
I wouldn't advocate it during negotiations, but if a regular line holder or reserve wants to pick up one 6 hour trip a month extra once in a while (or every month for that matter) at straight time I don't have a problem with that. After all, most of those trips are dropped by somebody else, with the occasional x pairing thrown in.
And yes the override does allow us to make some extra money, but that is compensation for the part of the job that other pilots don't want to do. Guys are always complaining that the flex guys don't ever fly the line, so some way to pick up a trip once in a while seems reasonable.
Also, not all flexes are covered under section 11.
Good discussion, probably not on subject here, but still good discussion. I think its good to get different opinions from the various communities within the company.
