Default Why are airlines not hiring at job fairs (e.g. UPS) ?

Someone asked the question in another thread, but it (the thread) got too big, hijacked, redirected, etc. I never did see an answer. But, there is one for those of you who don't know....

Because, at least in the case of AIR, Inc., Some airlines are paid by that organization to show up. You see, if HE pays them to be there, YOU will pay him to be there. It's about the money... from your perspective, and theirs.

Ive never heard of anybody getting an interview at a UPS or Fedex from these road shows. Im sure somebody will respond to my post and say "I did". But they are very few & far between. Its just "a show". Thats all it is. Recently the only interviewing and hiring at these things has been a few desperate regionals. Of course Air Inc. pays these people to be there(UPS,Fedex, etc...). They show up with thousands of over qualified pilots in their pilot data base. And they are not even hiring!!!

UPS was apparently there because they had made the commitment in advance

I attended two fairs, one about a year out from my mil retirement and one about 6 months out. Both times, I stood in line and talked to the guy that eventually ended up sitting across the table from me during my UPS interview. I'm not saying the fairs were the magic that made it all happen, but I was much more comfortable in the interview dealing with someone I already had spoken to a lot. He remembered me from the job fairs and I guess came away with a decent impression. I know it takes your time and money to attend, but in the grand scheme of things it certainly won't hurt your chances...it might even help.

I agree with b2pilot except I had to attend more than 2 job fairs.

The person I talked to at an AIRInc job fair did part of my HR interview. Another person I met at the WAI seminar did my sim ride. I'd say it definitely helped in my case.
Once hiring resumes focus on the women in aviation seminar - it's the best job fair out there in my view. I had much more one-on-one time with the recruiters there as it is spread out over three days versus 1 day only (the actual HR portion).

Oh, I'm not a lady; yes it's open to guys too.

I attended a job fair on a Saturday and was called Tuesday by the HR rep I met. Same rep did the interview

My first Air Inc I had a job offer (more or less) before the friday night festivities were over...never hurts to make contacts in a social setting
