But less of it as our BLG/RLGs are reduced!

True, but it would make me feel better-at least for a little bit!

This post pretty much sums up what I've heard from everywhere I've been in the last few weeks, but especially since Friday. When is the union going to start giving us ANY useful information from "the" direct source? DW and his retroactivity "doing the right thing" has fractured this union far worse than anything management could ever do. Was that "the right thing"?

I paid W/B Captain union dues last year (about $5400?) When I e-mailed my rep concerning this retro activity push by DW, I got an unsolicited response from an MEC member that said, "letting the majority make decisions is akin to mob rule".

I like the idea of sending my lanyard back to Prater. The USAir departure is still fresh in his memory. I wonder if he could see a disgruntled FedEx group as a threat?

My biggest beef with ALPA National (and DW specifically) is that they didn't show any concern when ICAO raised the rule. If it has always been about safety, why didn't they raise hell about that? I know why....it was all about the recent loss of dues revenue. They saw an opportunity to stuff the coffers for another five years.

This is my beef too. We all know Age 65 was going to happen, but I hated the fact that ALPA (and DW) didn't stand up and fight against it. I guess it's a principle thing. Had the results been the same, but we fought hard against it-I would not have the grudge that I have today. Heck, the NWA MEC voiced an opinion against it, why couldn't we have done that? The reason was $$, pure and simple.

Just curious how you guys figure ALPA gets more dues money from an age 60+ captain, than they do from an under age 60 captain?

Not that I wouldn't mind that....

I think they mean more money if the over 60 guy is getting charged as a wb capt vs so pay.

No, I think they mean, that they should be retired after age 60 and not paying anymore dues. No they are, except many of the over 60 crowd were non members.

All they did is to say that the seat is filled with the numbers they want---and it prevents excess after excess and so on.... which is all legal (at least that's what I was told by my rep as well).

I think the issue is that the company called the 727 S/O seat in excess on the first excess bid, which closed merely a week ago----then all of a sudden, it's not in excess and more people go into the seat than the number that occupied it before the first iteration. THAT seems like favoritism---and finding loopholes or creating them to get a "political" result. THIS action is what I believe is the controversial part in talking with buds in the company. The first action --- calling the S/O seat in excess allowed the over 60 guys to get back to wide body captain, without having vacancies. The second action---calling the S/O seat as the desired seat to overman (three to four days later)---dumped all the most junior guys back into the seat.

And this second action is what is making many folks think the company is setting up a furlough (which many believe was the plan all along). Putting this together with all of the "official" words (that are all parsed)--- "While furlough is always possible in the future...." " While no furlough is planned..." "We are not planning to furlough at this time..." " We have no plans to furlough as a result of this excess" etc. By flushing and dumping all the most junior guys from "critical" seats to a VERY VERY overmanned 727 S/O seat---it appears they are setting it up to chop from the bottom. So I think guys are trying to seek help anyway they can to save their jobs.

BTW, thanks for all your communications. You keep many of us informed, much more so than before..... Thanks
First--you are welcome. I don't think I can get as much info out as I would like, but its because I DON'T HAVE IT. I'm as in the dark on some of this as the rest of you.

Like some of you, I suspect some of these training slots will go away and a lot of these excesses won't happen. But if the economy continues south we are in a shape to have a plan. And that plan would probably include furloughs. Before we get to that point, however, there are a lot of bridges to cross. So I wouldn't lose sleep...but I would plan ahead.

As to why we had 50 excesses a while back and now we are going the other way...nobody makes a decision alone here. I think Orlando's RGS mantra of not furloughing and fattening up some seats to save training down the road was accurate. I personally think Orlando is a straight shooter, and honorable guy, (well...he is a former Bonehead so you know he's a good guy!), and was telling the truth. My own opinion is someone above him took another look at the numbers and said "no way...heres the NEW plan..." So--back to the drawing board--here we go AGAIN--this time with a lot more excesses.

I also think in this enviroment hiring into HKG is just not an option. Since you cannot force someone to an FDA, the only tool the company has is to make things look miserable enough to make another 20 guys take a second look at HKG. Get HKG filled...and I think some of this will ease. I don't tell guys how to bid--that's personal. However, if we do round up some heart souls willing to do the HKG thing, I think some of this noise will die down and maybe there won't need to be so many guys trained off the seats after all. I dunno...

Unfortunately, I think the company just figured how to fill CDG and MD10 HKG in the future....
