This just doesn't add up to me. DHL already has a stake in Polar and uses them for long-haul lift. DHL has teamed up with Lufthansa to create a long haul carrier with 15 777Fs. Why would they pay a premium to UPS to do this flying all of a sudden when they have this other stuff going on?

If they are pulling out of the US domestic market, they certainly don't need a $1 billion contract with UPS. They can probably use commercial airlines to distribute much of their incomming int'l stuff once its here. The stuff which isn't next day air anyway.

Bingo! Although to toss more out there, what's been dropped is domestic sales. Followed by domestic service. Prior to the ABF merger, the system was the size it will be after the cutbacks from a ground operations perspective. That kept 50 jets and inumerable turbo prop feeder a/c busy hauling nothing but international material. Will that be enough for DHL to ditch the UPS deal? Or, for it to be too small to interest UPS? No one will know until either Bonn or Atlanta lets everyone know.

That's the reason the deal is taking so long because it is much more than first announced. Also, the whole 10 year agreement should have been a dead giveaway from the start. Now it is all starting to make sense.

DHL America will be a website and a phone number.
FR8K9,

Maybe I am reading you wrong, but your post screams of gloating. Try to put yourself in an Astar or ABX pilot's shoes when writing these posts... I know that is hard to do when you are literally on top of the world flying for UPS. But if the situation was reversed, I think that you might agree with me.

If you are gloating, gloat quietly; However, if I misread you.. Please accept my apology.

Not according to that Logistics Management article that is quoted on here somewhere.

Specifically ...

reducing pickup and linehaul delivery routes by 17 and 18 percent, respectively; and expanding DHL’s partnership with the United States Postal Service, which will enable DHL to continue delivering to more rural parts of the US, among others.

I am not gloating. If it's okay with you, I think it's fine for me to state my opinion even though the company I work for seems to be coming out on top this time.

From now on I will clear everything with you before I state an opinion on here. I've already notified the moderators that I won't post again until I clear it with you, since I work for UPS.

Or look at it this way: DHL could transport, sort and deliver UPS freight to the rest of the world outside of the US.

Especially since DHL 'was/started' as an American Company....sad.

Default What is going on?

Just curious about something.

UPS and DHL do not even have a contract about this "future package deal" that everyone cant stop talking about. It is all just press releases at this point. Speculation at best.

Well it seems that Fedex is going after most of DHL's big customers in North America. I am just wondering where is the out cry from ALPA over this one?

At the hearings UPS said that they are not using the partnership with DHL to eliminate them. Wallace, said the UPS card promoting UPS over DHL was not endorsed by UPS and they wouldnt do something like that. One element of this deal that is an antitrust concern is that UPS would eliminate DHL from the marketplace. DHL testified that this deal would allow them to better compete. FedEx on the otherhand is agressively competing but not negotiating a partnership with DHL. Thats the difference.
