I'm probably overly optimistic however I think this recession is like no others before but also never before have foreign governments and foreign central banks cooperated on such a scale as they have this time...
It'll be painful and I wouldn't be surprised to see all kinds of cost cutting procedures but I still think (and hope) it won't go all the way to a furlough...
I think if we haven't been furloughed by May or so we should be fine... Right now everyone is watching what their opponents are doing and I think many businesses have laid people off "just in case" things get worst...
Let's hope for the best...

I don't want to come off as being mean or unkind, or on the severe level of BIGGS. I am speaking from the bottom 5% on the list so I am worried myself. I really think you will be swimming a very long time. I hope you have a PLAN B other then UPS. I love my job here. Its the best 121 I have flown for, but I honestly doubt I will be flying here 9 months from now. I have been cutting my expenses to the minimum and preparing for the worst.
We just announced 50 mechanic layoffs DC-8's leaving and rumors of having 757's just sitting hot and I cannot tell you how many entire trip parings and legs cancel for lack of volume. Its mind blowing.
If only my operating trips would cancel. The ones that cancel are my jump seats to/from work.
In 10 years association with 121 flying (3 companies) It seems I have been through more displacement bids then vacancy bids.
As technology progresses and electronic signatures replace the actual thing then many overnight letters will cease as well. For you UPS pilots who don't believe just open your op specs and look at the bottom of each page. Its all electronic signatures. Its the future.
Good luck and I hope I am very WRONG and you are pulling gear for me 15 to 20 years from now when I check out as captain!!!!!

Next day letters are not what we make our money on. Masybe FDX moreso than us. This, I bet and hope, is a v shaped recession. A quick downturn followed by a equally robust recovery.
Also, remember that our economy and the world's economy have been cooking for the last few years. A 25% drop in something just takes us back to 2005 levels in many cases. UPS is effected less than FDX by these knee jerk actions and reactions in the business world. FDX is probably the best place to be when the economy is great. UPS is the best for when the economy is bad. FWIW.
