Good on ya for knowing and doing what's best for you. As Dirty Harry said, "A man's gotta know his limitations."

Well in that case I think you missed your true calling as a member of the US Congress!! If you didn't pay your taxes you would also qualify for a Cabinet position!

I have a very good friend at UPS who is going to the right seat of the 747 in ANC next week. He says UPS is likely to furlough 300. Their union is in talks with mngt about it now.

I am in my 3rd year at FedEx. Our mngt says "we have no intention of furloughing." We have 36 F/O and 20 CA vacancies open in HKG right now. We just announced 33 additional positions(not vacancies) in the 727 in South America.

Rumors are just rumors. We won't be hiring for years, but I doubt we will furlough. Of course, anything is possible.

I hope you are right. About 1000 FedEx employees (non pilots) lost their jobs today. Terrible news.

They took paycuts first and now some have lost their jobs altogether. The pilots have taken paycuts and now I fear the next step.

At least the economy is showing signs of improvement.....stay positive folks. That's about all we can do......

Just semantics, but UPS is threatening up to 300 furloughs. I personally don't believe that 300 pilots will get furloughed. Yes, our union is in talks with the company about VOULUNTARY programs that will reach their projected target of $54 million in savings. In fact, the data that we have presented to the company, if done correctly, will save them the $54 mil plus. We are NOT talking to them about any contractual concessions.

Now, knowing UPS, if they decide to send a message "to the inmates showing them who is running the asylum", I can see a furlough of about 100. If the DC8 is parked after peak, we will have extra FEs that have been displaced on paper that haven't been trained yet. They can be furloughed without any major impact on the system. I am holding out hope that UPS agrees to implement our cast savings ideas and these jobs may be spared. Only time will tell...

Of course, this is only one man's opinion...

Can you detail what kind of cost savings are being discussed, $54 mil in savings sounds like alot; just curious what is going on at Brown wrt furlough mitigation.

I'd like to believe management about the "we have no intention of furloughing"; They certainly have said it enough times.

However, these latest 2 excess bids seem (to me) to finally put the company in a position to furlough, if necessary. Previously, a furlough of say, 300 guys, would have resulted in dudes in almost every seat being hit: HKG FOs, ANC FOs, A300 MEM FOs, 727 FOS, 727 SOs.

By the time these excesses have closed, a furlough of 300 guys would only come from two seats: HKG FO and 727 SO. The 727 SO seat will be comfortably fat after the latest excess. And frankly, I don't believe the additional vacancies of HKG FO are a result of a gigantic increase in flying over there. Rather, I think it's the company's hope to get a few more senior guys in that seat to help offset any they'd lose in a furlough.

Hope I'm wrong and the "we have no intention to furlough" stuff sticks.

They are definitely getting into position to furlough just in case they need too.

Why then wouldn't the company lop off the bottom 300 guys and then rebid the whole airline? Is this feasible or is it even permissible per the contract,,curious, not advocating it.
