Default FDX - Class of Travel Question

I have a pairing that has a midtrip deadhead and is labeled First class (F) and has the bank for a first class ticket. I just got the travel reservation, and it is in business. The scheduled block of the flight is 9+15 (duty time of 11+45). I know the contract says it is up to the company on higher class with block less than 10, but if the pairing says first class, shouldn't the ticket be first class?

It says "first" in the pairing because the pairing simply flags a higher class of service by using Y or F. The actual booking of the "higher" class must comply with the CBA and you are correct, <10hours is up to the CO. I would guess they somehow will always choose the cheaper option.

c. Higher Class of Service
i. If a higher class of service is authorized on a deadhead
with less than 10 scheduled block hours, such
service shall be booked in Business or First Class at
the Company’s option, subject to availability on the
scheduled flight.

Does the flight even offer first, or is there only a business cabin?

It has first and business, 747. I guess I could midtrip deviate and spend all the money.

With that level the only way you'll get FC is if it's discounted. Many carriers don't offer us discounted first class (Air France for instance) or offer very few discounted fares (CX). If your block is over 16 then they have to book you in full fare first class if it's avail - otherwise it's a priority - discounted first class then discounted business then full fare business. As a result we often end up in Business Class.

If you really want a more accurate answer/response to your situation then you need to elaborate and give more details about your trip. There are a lot of different scenario's that dictate class of service.

My guess is that you are on an RFO pairing and a lot of foreign carriers either have no FC or very limited FC seating.

MTD is always an options too
