Default Working Extra at FedEx

I just flew with another MEM-based RFO who's working on his days off, draft and volunteer. He had all the typical excuses and fails to acknowledge the harm he's doing to himself and all of us in the long run. He claimed he now understands, but instead he's blocked his calendar so it seems obvious he does not get it at all.

I apologize for the generalization I'm about to make, but what's going on with the MEM pilots? Don't they get it? ANC and SFS can't get a contract by themselves but it seems we're the only ones actively involved in this!

Are the block reps in MEM contacting their pilots? Are names of guys screwing the rest of us being passed around? Are guys being challenged when they fly extra?

Okay, I'm ranting I know, and I apologize to those MEM pilots who are actively involved. But it seems like way too many (well, at least way too many MD-11 international pilots) are not pulling their weight.

At SWA we have a good % of pilots that are entirely driven by their own wants and needs, too. They have no shame. They drink the company Kool Aid and could care less about their brethren and any group effort whereby their lifestyle or pay is even slightly crimped.

It's not just at FedEx you have such selfish, gimme mine and screw you, company suckups. Every airline has them, and it's unfortunate because if everyone did pull on that same rope together..... the synergy would be awesome, and all pilots would end up benefiting from their short term sacrifice.

Any action by any Block Reps could be considered by the company to be a job action by the union - and we could get our PP whacked real hard. ALPA can't even suggest anything like not selling your vacation or not taking any volunteer or draft trips. If they did, we would risk a court battle over violation of "status-quo" - and this is one the union is not willing to risk.

However, any decision we individually make is a different matter. If you feel the need to spend more time with your family, or if you think that two years is long enough and you're tired of bailing the company out when they haven't been hiring enough pilots -- that's your own decision.

That said, I hope that you who are "enlightened" will explain to our fellow crewmembers, the damaging effect that working extra has on our negotiations. Explain the facts, and let them each make their own decisions.

...but it's not an ALPA thing.

Okay, I see that. How about senior captains rather than block reps then. Lot's (maybe all?) of our guys watch calendars and we call/email those who are playing around. How about down south?

Any pressure has to come from us, the pilot group. Not the union or union reps.

If you're gonna do the dirty deed (fly extra) then stand up and admit it. If you aren't admiting it (hiding your calendar, etc) THEN YOU MUST KNOW IT IS WRONG.

When I get called for draft, I always get the flight info, then say no. Then I see who is picking it up.

One captain told an FO in SFS that picked up open time that if that happened again, that would be the last landing that FO would get from that captain. Ever.

I used to think that flying extra was no big deal. But the company isn't motivated to move along with this contract if the pilots haven't shown they want to and are serious. If you fly extra, you tell them you are happy with the old contract, no need to get anything changed anytime soon.

OOOOHHHHH, What a threat that is! When I was an F/O, I could of cared less if I flew the leg or not. YOU GET PAID THE SAME WHETHER YOU MAKE THE LANDING OR NOT!!!!

Sheesh "Browntail" just telling you what I heard. It wasn't my threat.

It would suck if I had to show up at the sim to get my 3 landings every 90 days. And it would suck if I never got to fly a leg. Forget the pay being the same.

Let's just get this thing done so we can all go back to what we were doing before.....
