Guys and gals please excuse my ignorance on this issue but could I ask two questions about it. Firstly, what exactly is a “draft” and secondly, what about the guy or the girl who really, really needs the extra dough for the month or so to do something really important like help out a family member in desperate need, and so on? How do they go about explaining their motives to the rest of the crew? I understand that you take a stand now, and it helps out a whole bunch later, but what about the flyers with “good intentions”??

Sorry, I don't know what Draft is.
As for the "needy aircrew member," flying extra once in a while wouldn't be harmful to the "cause." The problem is that it appears that too many are flying extra and helping out the company at a time when the union is trying to convince management to see things their way with respect to scope, QOL, etc.
If the status quo is preserved, management has no incentive to shift from their position.
As for the "good intentions..."

Draft = you get called by scheduling at home, on a day off, and asked to fly a trip. The trip pays 150% of normal pay. Volunteer = you tell scheduling that you'll fly extra - when they call, you got to go. 150% pay again.
I think most guys could sympathize with a guy in that position, but that doesn't make it the right thing to do. The problem 99.5% of the time, is guys adjust their life stlye (spending habits, cars, houses, boats, etc) beyond what they can support with normal pay. Financial planners suggest a buget that includes your wife not working, so if or when something comes along (kids, medical bills, etc), you can exist without having to downsize homes, etc. Nothing wrong with the wife working - just make the buget work without her working.

There is a disconnect here somewhere.

FoxHunter you are like a broken record, and yes I am old enough to know what a broken record is. Maybe you should have got some more of your wiser friends to vote when the poll was taken. They probably all sat on their *ss and did nothing just like they did on the ANC LOA vote.
