January 1998 it became a domicile. Before that it was always a fast growing gateway. ONT flys most of the west coast domestic trips, HNL, and Asia trips as far west as CGN Germany. Rarely does an ONT crew do a north atlantic crossing. Kinda a senior base for Captains.

I got trained for it but I think you would actually have to go with a checkairman and get line checked in the Atlantic the first time. Correct me if I am wrong please but that is my understanding.

I think you only have to fly with a captain who is qualified/current in the Atlantic since you have had the training.

If you've flown as a Captain on ANY aircraft across the north atlantic, you ARE qualified. One ONT Captain was rescheduled to operate CGN-PHL, and when he asked, he found out he WAS qualified from his days on the DC8 many years prior. UPS has its OWN company policy that used to require you to fly a NA crossing in your AC type.

PS. the ONT Captain insisted on having a check airman accompany him on the flight, and the company did just that.
