UPS to hire 40 pilots
#211
A buddy just took the assessment today and here is what he said to me;
"It's a couple dozen different screens of 10 questions each. It's in two sections and they corelate. No way to prepare, just answer them honestly."
At the end he got a message saying he would be contacted directly soon. He got an email notifiying him of the assessment and before that his application showed "active".

I was in the UPS pool back in 07 and had a similar experience with the on file vs active status, waiting for the assessment emails, etc. It sounds like the process they are using is the same this time around. Here are a few threads from back then.

I think Husker is dead on correct too. 7 years ago my new hire class had 21 people in it. There were easily a dozen different backgrounds and stories in the class. Our ages spanned from late 20s to the early 50s. I think UPS has always done it this way. It is a crazy eclectic pilot group but one that is easily the most unified I've ever heard of or seen.
I always say this is the best job I've ever had working for the worst people I've ever worked for. You take the good with the bad and know you have the best union on the planet behind you.
P.S. I was furloughed and I don't come to work ****ed about it.

If you only hire folks with the most flight time and time in type, then you will get a very experienced older pilot group. Who would be the next generation to bring continuity to your pilot group as it ages and retires its members? To have ten thousand hours and several thousand hours PIC in heavy aircraft, you certainly aren't talking about the 25-40 year old age group....more likely it would be 45-55. But I would think UPS would want some younger pilots who would be around for 30 plus years. This, of course, is only my opinion. UPS tends to avoid having one group within its ranks having too much influence on the other groups. Regional guys bring a certain expertise and quality to the airline, as do military guys and corporate guys. A good mix has previously been UPS' target and I guess I would be surprised if that changed this time around. I have nothing other than my gut to substantiate this supposition.
The flying that we freight-haulers do is sort of unique within the industry, and not everyone can do it. If I were doing the hiring, I'd be looking for the biggest bang I could get for my buck, and the one that would cost me the least amount of "down time" with the new hires. I'd much prefer that my cockpits be manned by two experienced guys, rather than one and one. Training costs, although they appear to be high, in the overall scheme of things, aren't and if I had to train a new guy every 10 or 15 years to replace a retiring guy, that's a small price to pay, compared to the experience level that is brought to the company by a more highly trained pilot.
If I were having brain surgery, which my wife thinks I need, I'd be looking for the most experienced neurosurgeon I could find, not someone with fewer surgeries, and lesser time in the operating room.

JJ,
All that makes sense if you assume that management wants to hire the most qualified pilot they can. What if they want to hire the most docile employee they can?
(Looking over the neighbor's fence perspective) I think UPS management would like to hire nothing but NURPS. If they can't get enough to bite on that package, they could look to hire line pilots that might act like they expect NURPS to act. They'll look to hire based on "other" qualifications.
"If the minimum wasn't good enough, it wouldn't be the minimum"

Does UPS hire into a pool? If offered the job, how long can you defer your training start date due to mil sep, etc. ?
Anyone get a call to interview yet after completing the assessment?
Do they pay for your travel to/from the interview?
From a previous post, is it correct to assume that it would be possible to get ONT out of the gate? Is that because there is a lot of movement between domiciles as a junior reserve bubba?
A new thread just started mentioned hiring might ramp up to 200 pilots....

Passed the psycho analysis and now invited to "Day 1 Event". Waiting to hear back with confirmation on travels and hotels.
Anyone else joining me? I was explained it will be a Three day process. Day 1 will include just a sim check. If passed will be asked to stay for Day 2 and 3, which is a full medical check up at a clinic in Louisville and CRM/problem solving group work. Day 3 will be a meeting with HR and a Captain. Not much intel available on willflyforfood.com
Anyone know of a good UPS interview prep they can recommend?
Quals:
9750 total
6650 pic
Currently Emirates 777 Capt.
My wife is from Seattle and we want to be based in Anchorage and commute. Any idea how long it will take to get that base?
Going on year 9 in the Sandbox and about ready to return to America.
