UPS to hire 40 pilots
#671
Thanks to the IPA we only furloughed 109. We were lucky to have leverage as a union due to all the junior guys being in ANC. It nearly was much, much, worse.

Careful now. Shaggy has publicly stated he agrees with the reasoning of crossing over. Why should he have to wait all these years to upgrade!? Shaggy want be a captain now.

LMAO!!!
If this is "the best" then you need to expand your horizon a tad..For starters....I've seen part 135 outfits better run than this place. Sure the pay is good...but what are we trading for the money that you won't get to spend when you die at 65.5 due to the nasty night schedules that we endure?
Again..You are those mil types that don't know **** outside UPS. So please spare me the "best in the airline world" bs.
Trust me dude...this place aint ****.

No, they have to wait until a slowdown. Then it's an "emergency overmanning situation." A situation that was created by a quick, ill timed fleet change. They would term it just the opposite.
You need to give credit where it's due. UPS doesn't care if they create manning problems due to fleet drawdown mismanagement.

We had this at Purple. Not a conspiracy, just bean counter policy. They couldn't bear to get rid any Dc-10s when the economy was booming. "We need the lift!" Not incidentally, it would have allowed a graceful retraining of pilots.

Exactly ... management's lack of planning and ineptitude does not constitute an "emergency" for the crew force.
The parking of the DC-8s was certainly ill-timed, but it would have happened in a booming economy. The FAA was in the process of grounding most of the fleet ...

According to mechanics, the logbooks/maintenance history/parts history was so bad the FAA was contemplating a full-on jihad. That, plus the DC-8 had serious RVSM issues, due in part to the rippled, yet built like a tank skin and that the NAV systems would not be able to comply with RNP/RNAV SID/STAR requirements.
That whole paid holiday will go down as one of the best deals ever in aviation.
