Day sleeping

Just finished up three years of shift work. A common problem was folks with families who found it difficult to "stay on schedule" during the weekends, and sometimes even during the week. I had this problem also.
In addition to a lot of the good information in this thread, I also had this trick that worked really well: I ate on schedule.
While eating right (avoiding the Carl's Jr 6-dollar-burger/sleeping pill), I ate my meals according to my work schedule, regardless of what I was doing on that particular day. That often meant that while spending time with my family on "my weekend", I would have nothing but water after 6am, then enjoy dinner with my family. My "lunch" was then around midnight, and I would eat again just before 6am.

The FAA determined that since we fly at night - i.e., when there's no weather to worry about - we really don't need any sleep. So they came up with an exemption for us, the so called cargo stay-awake carve-IN; it's all explained and summarized in part §666.
I've heard check-ride and FAA medical exemptions are next. We don't need 'em. Besides, we aren't real pilots, we're just cargo haulers.

This has worked for me:
Big breakfast (eggs, potato etc) - Will increase how tired you feel
Sleep in dark room with phone off right after breakfast
Wake up after 6/7 hours
Go workout/run errands/Kids
Repeat.
I swear everyone that flew those on a regular basis after several years looked older than their actual age by 5-10 years for the most part.
Hope this helps.
