Simple solution. If you are the Captain, send the sick crew member home. If you are the f/o, tell the D.O. that you don't want to fly with a sick crew member, and have the D.O. resolve the problem. Either remove you, or have the Captain removed. Of course, talk it over with the sick crew member first, and if that doesn't solve the problem, then contact the D.O.

Any captain who allows an obviously sick crew member to stay on the trip could possibly be accused of violating (or at least being complicit in violating) FAR 61.53: Prohibition on Operations During Medical Deficiency. If, heaven forbid, there should be an incident, even if altogether unrelated to the sick crew member's performance, who knows how many FAR's the feds would throw at them both.
Adopting this policy, however, would very likely lead to some quite interesting and probably heated discussions in the crew room. How many of our captains are AME's and qualified to tell for certain whether one is "sick" by FAR definition or not?
I agree that the best policy is an open discussion between the crew members involved. It can be a very touchy subject. One man's sniffle may be another man's swine flu. And not everybody has a full sick bank. One international trip can burn a whole year's worth of sick leave credit.
All that said, it's unkind, discourteous, disrespectful, and downright wrong to fly when you know you're sick and might expose others to whatever you've got. Maybe that's why we have Makeup Sick for when we have to burn sick leave we don't have.

Sorry, but I would never call a seagull/company man about another crewmember. What's next, calls about violations of the corporation's silly costume policy?

Carry extra " Z " pacs in your bag if you have them. Vitamin C, and B, and zinc can also help fight off a cold. I also carry aciddaplis xx aciddupolis, xx Acidophilus (got that spelling correct) to help keep that good bacteria in your gut. At least this way if a bro gets sick in the field at least you can help him in the field while he's trying to work his way home. JM2c.

Recently had an FO sniffling/coughing in the seat at beginning of multiple day pairing. After some brief discussion, he admitted he was "slightly" under the weather. I was more than slightly ****ed.
I gave him the following options:
1. Call sick in the field once we arrive at the layover.
2. Return to MEM and call in sick.
3. I remove you from the trip via GOC/CRS/DO coordination. Go home and don't fly SCK again.
4. If you disagree with above options, I elect option #3 and contact Pro Standards as well.
He chose option 2.
It's not that tough - call in SCK if you're sick. Don't screw over the other crew member.
Geesh, you would think most would catch the clue.
The final caveat ... if I get sick because of you, then (use your imagination)
