On the MD-11, OT is normally available in November and December. You just have to bid your days off to be when the flying is heaviest. If your days off fall after Christmas, OT is unlikely. 24 days a month average is unlikely for the whole year, but shouldn’t be a problem during peak. I got 26 last November and will do more this year. It’s my choice because of the 2X pay and I’m glad to have the option. Last year, Jan and Feb were slow, but OT was available throughout the rest of the year. Who knows what will happen this year? The company is working on inking some new contracts in Dec. The bottom line is that there are plenty of guys that only want to fly the minimum (20 days during peak, 17 off peak) and enough guys that want OT to keep 98% happy.
Are you on the 74 or the MD?
If you're MD, do you know how realistic getting extra on days and OT is on average. Im sure DEC has plenty of OT opportunity, but DEC is the busiest month of the year. I was sold on the availability of 24 day months if you wanted them. So far, its not looking like i'm going to be getting the chance to OT in DEC i've been waiting for IOE for a month. I've heard after DEC through to around SEP things are pretty slow. If you're on the phone with crew scheduling a few days before the end of your cycle telling them you want to stay working, is there work to be had?

Thanks man, that's about what I guessed it would be like. This whole not starting OE until "sometime in December" thing is really putting a damper on the wallet. I was hoping to fly a ton during peak and at the very least pay back what I had to borrow for training.
Ill be taking as many OT days as I can get for at least my first year.
Been driving uber 5 nights a week, I'm just itchy to fly something not made by toyota.

For 2017, 24 days could have easily been done. With the recent hiring surge and much lower attrition, 2018 may be different. From a profit point of view, it doesn’t make sense to pay OT if Manning permits otherwise. Living in FL may improve your chances because of RSW.

Yeah, they've done a pretty solid amount of hireing. Although it'll take a few months for everyone to hit the line.
I understand from the company point of view OT is always a strain on the bottom line.
I'm sure that the level of attrition isn't anywhere near the regional level of attrition. Attrition is good for pilots, but bad for business. The company, at least in the training department seems to really want to do what with in reason needs to be done to retain people and slow attrition too but what happens when legacy further ramps up hireing. I know it's not an option for some guys and not a desire for others, but this sector of aviation is a love it or hate it deal. There's got to he guys wanting out still.
And sadly (not) I don't live in Florida. Not a fan of the sunshine state.

Do most cargo ACMI carriers fly their pilots business class or better on international flights these days? I'm curious if Western is unusual in this sense. If they are I wonder if they might be changing that soon to match the standard of the other carriers.

I can't speak for the others but Kalitta Air (K4) contractually has business class or better on international Dead Head over three hours (This includes Alaska and Hawaii). If it is not available at the time of purchase there is financial compensation to the pilot. Generally the company will turn themselves inside out trying to find ways to get you at least partially to/from the destination on company aircraft. This isn't as bad as it sounds unless it is a pure freighter and every seat full. I actually prefer company aircraft if they are not full. Business class seat, walk around when you want and eat on your own schedule. You might even score a bunk.

Finally starting OE
Looks like Africa rotations out of Liege.
Can someone tell me if I should be packing a pad and a sleeping bag or something for on board rest on the MD or are the Africa flights not long enough for sleep in the back?
Or should i pack a bed roll anyway in case the schedule changes or I get my wish and stay out after my IOE?

As far as packing a bed. You will get tired of carrying that thing around. Some people have hammocks they take around...
