Scam: noun; an illegal plan for making money:
Some of it has nothing to do with discipline or commitment. You can work out every day and not get great results. You can get a more effective workout with a trainer. Should you need him/her for every workout, no but it is good to have some suggestions on the best workout for what you want. A trainer can target areas and suggest things that will work better than your workout.
Why do you think every college and major sports team has strenght/speed trainers? Think there's no discipine on the teams? They all must be prima-donnas with no drive.
What about the celebrity types that can radically change their physique?
And honestly if a person does need a trainer due to lack of discipline, but that trainer gets him/her off the couch and in shape, who cares if it's a "scam", because if it worked then it's not a scam.

Usually I find myself disagreeing with you on almost every one of your posts, however, on this one, I also find myself disagreeing with you (yet again.)
A personal trainer can be a very valuable tool, not so much for to have someone motivate you, but to help you with diet, stretching exercises, strength training exercises (for the body parts that one might want to recoup), suggesting the correct exercise machines and appropriate weights to both start out with as well provide correct lifting techniques, so one doesn't strain or harm themselves. It's not always about motivation. Workouts do require a discipline and commitment and I do agree that a trainer will not, over time, provide these motivations to someone who is really only going through the motions. I therefore recommend that anyone's workout be something that they actually enjoy doing (with the exception of fishing), something that they can look forward to doing on a long-term basis. That and push-aways (from the table, that is.)

I can tell you are all about DO'in IT by yourself...and I am sure that it has nothing to do with discipline but more of a lifestyle as a result of...well being you.
For someone that has never been part of a team...athletically or professionally I can understand why you would think that getting instruction in something would be weak. There is no reason to explain it to you...To bad, so sad...

Working out with a buddy works for me- we both have to show up, we challenge each other, and we tend to stay longer. Having a trainer is just taking it to the next level. They make sure your form is safe, show you new routines you might not have known about, and kick your rear in gear.
