Others will chime in but I would apply now but update my FEX asap. Need to start networking. Think about the Corporate side and the training department if you are light on contacts. Search this site for info, call albie. Looks like hiring may slow a bit so getting a training or corporate gig and taking a 2-3 year hit may be advantageous.

VALIDITY OF AIRMAN KNOWLEDGE TEST REPORTS
Airman Knowledge Test Reports are valid for the 24-calendar month period preceding the month you complete the practical test. The validity period may be extended when application is made to take the oral and flight tests, if the following requirements are met.
1. Air Carrier Employees. The following criteria apply to flight crewmembers and mechanics employed by a 14 CFR part 121 or 14 CFR part 135 air carrier. Employment by a 14 CFR part 135 on demand operator does not qualify an applicant for an extension:
a. Applicants who are flight crewmembers must have completed initial new-hire training, initial equipment training, or transition training.
b. Applicants who are flight crewmembers must be participating in a training program which includes a recurrent training curriculum in accordance with 14 CFR part 121 or 14 CFR part 135.
c. Applicants who are mechanics must meet the currency requirements of 14 CFR part 65.
d. Applicants must be currently employed by a 14 CFR part 121 or a 14 CFR part 135 air carrier. However, applicants do not need to have been continuously employed by a qualified air carrier between the time they passed the knowledge test and the time they apply to take the oral and flight tests.
2. Military Applicants. The following criteria apply to military applicants who apply for extensions on the basis of participation in a training program of a scheduled military transport service:
a. Applicants must have participated in a flight engineer or maintenance training program at the time of passing the knowledge test or begun a flight engineer or maintenance training program within 24-calendar months after passing the knowledge test.
b. Applicants must be currently participating in a military flight engineer or maintenance training program.
3. Continued Eligibility Documentation. Inspectors and examiners will not accept an expired Airman Knowledge Test Report unless the applicant provides written evidence of continued eligibility. When satisfactory evidence is presented, the inspector or examiner will enter, date, and sign the
following statement on the test report: “The period of validity of this form has been extended in accordance with the provisions of 14 CFR part 63, section 63.35(d).”

Clear as mud ???
Whether or not the reg allows an exemption is immaterial to your interests. The bottom line is UPS will want one that is less than 2 years old. I think your "conflicting" information is in reference to the part I highlighted.
I was even told (by a friend, not UPS) that I could go to the local FSDO and have #3 done. But decided not to.
I used GLEIM software. Bought it on Thursday. Passed (90+) on Monday. Approx $60-70 well spent. Consider it a review for a possible interview, and a tax deduction.

Same is true with FedEx. You must have a current (within 2 years) FE written when you start class. I would get it current asap whether you can fill out the app or not. I think you can apply without it current, but you won't get an interview or class date without a current written. FedEx will not accept the part 121 continuous employment waiver except in very rare circumstances (like military guys deployed for the past 6 month).
Good luck.
Good luck.

Not to change the subject too much, but do any of the currently employed UPS people have any inkling as to what the story is with the online application?
I had applied last year, but did not get a chance to reapply for 2007 and I have a recommendation already turned in for me, so I am just itching to reapply... Anybody have a time-frame on when it might be back up again?! Thanks for the info....

"I have read conflicting information on FEx currency. I took it several years ago. Do I need to take it again before the interview or before class if hired?"
It’s probably easier to understand if you put yourself in the recruiter’s “shoes.”
- “I have 2 guys here with identical quals; one of them took his written about a year ago, the other one 7 years ago and is now trying to use the FE Written part 121 exemption rule. Hmmm, which one should I hire?”
Besides, it’s always good to refresh what you’ve “learned” during your last 24 hour Learn-All-The-Correct-Answers-Wonder-Course @ ALL-ATPs.

sounds like you meet all the quals, but I’d suggest you look into some of the smaller cargo outfits first, Gemini, Kalitta, etc. Seems like most classes at UPS nowadays are either military guys with international experience or pilots from Gemini, World, Kalitta, Cathay, etc. – in other words cargo outfits where they get plenty of international experience. I talked to one ex-Gemini pilot who was hired some 4-6 months ago and he said he only spent 8 months at Gemini when UPS called him.
Also he had NO (ZERO) recommendations! – pretty much unheard of in the past!
Heavy jet + international experience equals 25 strong recommendations right now!!!
“I have a few friends at UPS and they were telling me to fill out the online application at upsjobs.com and I could not find it. I thought maybe I was not looking in the right place.”
It’s there but only a few hours a day, there’s a problem with their online application and they are working on it but it might be a while. Keep looking and one day you’ll find it: upsjobs.com – Professional Opportunities – Air Operations » hopefully you’ll see a Flight Officer, Second Officer, or Pilot link there somewhere eventually. They are all the same - they put you in whichever seat that comes open but probably FO as they are running out of FE seats for over 60 guys. When you do see the link – make sure you complete the entire application before you log out!!! Otherwise you’ll get a message that you do not meet the minimums!
and will have to reapply again in 12 months or so! At least that’s what I’ve heard; hope they fix the computer system soon though!
Good luck!

I called the 1-800 pilot hotline last night. The recording said that they "have more than enough qualified applicants and are no longer accepting applications at this time." It also mentioned to keep calling the hotline for further changes or updates...

Thanks everyone for the input. I really appreciate it. It looks like I should try the international freight companies. Just not sure which one is worth a dang. I don't want to be out on the road 20 straight days. I have a business on the side that needs some attention every week.
