I see Miami Air is hiring again. What's the latest over there?

Does first officer pay really top out at probationary pay for the legacies or is the info on this website outdated?

Yes, hiring. QOL and pay info is about the same as it's always been. I wrote this over on that other forum:

Plan to live in South Florida. There are only about 6 or so of the 70'ish pilots that commute from anywhere beyond south / central / southwest FL. 12 days free of duty per month, with many lines having 10 of those in a single block. No trip longer than 7 days unless you volunteer for it. Frequent days off in MIA between trips along with reserve at home equal extra days with family - unless you commute. As for commuting, you can't think of it in the traditional airline sense, i.e. jumpseating home for a couple days between trips. You cannot do that here. You are always on at least 11 hour call out between trips, unless you're on one of your 12 days free of duty. So jumpseating home for a day or two is out of the question. They will emphasis this at the interview. Pay is low. Don't expect to exceed guarantee much, if ever.

One other thing regarding QOL that I should mention and that will be emphasized at the interview briefing, also. When you bid, you are really bidding for the days off (days free of duty) that you want. Although the lines will show known flying, Scheduling will take those trips away from you and reflow everyone at the drop of a hat. I don't think I've flown a whole month's line as bid and awarded yet. We do not have any visibility on open-time trips, and we cannot "drop" trips without calling in sick. So when you get awarded that line with the 3 days off in Hawaii, don't bother making plans and waxing your surf board, cause by the time it rolls around, you'll actually spend those days doing Havana turns instead.

This is actually not a bad gig for someone that wants to be based in and reside in south, central, or southwest FL. If location is more important than pay, and you want to do interesting and varied flying, (vs up and down the east coast), then apply. I wouldn't be surprised if they add another class beyond May to make up for the attrition of the past year.

What's a "typical" week at work?

I'm not sure I could give a typical week example. Trips will start with either a commercial to meet an airplane somewhere, or a launch out of the local area (MIA or FLL typically.) Occasionally you'll take a crew van to somewhere farther afield in south FL, like MCO. A normal duty day is 1 to 3 legs. About 40% of our flights are empty to reposition the airplane to another client. When flying professional sports teams, departure times ar often right after the game ends, so very late at night. Layovers are normally more than the minimum because someone else took your jet when you landed, and you're now waiting for it or another one to come back.

Standby is either 11 hours callout, or if you're placed on short call, it's 1.5 hours.

Trips vary from one-day runs to 10 days long. Where we go depends on the season. During the winter sports season, the vast majority of our flying is domestic. Other times, we do lots of Carribean, a fair bit of South America, occasional Europe, and the rare Africa or Pacific trips. So, like I said, hard to describea typical week, since they're always very different.

Brokeasspot 04-01-2014 06:07 AM

When on reserve, are there many "pop up" trips that fall into the 1.5 callout?
