Guess a few words like "Growth" or "furlough" never entered your thoughts..... How many are below is a very important thing to know. Then again when upgrading, how may are below you means a great deal; in fact, many pilots hold off the upgrade until they have enough below them so they can avoid being on reserve, or even until they'd be senior enough to hold a specific base.... so as usual, your prolific postings aren't all that accurate.

Tell that to reserve captains at mesa in dfw who are in the top 60 percent in base. It all works together. Yes it all matters but pilots above you matters more.

What matters as far as holding a line vs reserve is only how many above you. The number below you only matters for furlough and I took my mea culpa on that. Growth? You move up when people leave, retire or die. Hiring more doesn’t move you up. Yes your percentage in base might decrease but it doesn’t change your seniority and it only matters if flying increases. Oh and you HIGHLIGHTED where I said MORE FLYING. That’s growth. So maybe that entered my mind.
once you are regularly a line holder, then how many above you becomes important. If there are only 45 guys senior to you, then you only need to bid 46 lines.
when it’s close to upgrade time, how many away from upgrade is somewhat important, but guys do still bypass for various reasons. Again, how many are junior becomes important in determining if you’ll be on reserve again. How many are above comes into play for things like flow also. For guys that hold off the upgrade for specific equipment or bases are much more interested in how many are junior to them. They wait until the guys junior to them are off reserve, then they upgrade and go straight to line holder.
now, once you’re a lifer at a regional, then the how many above becomes important again. If there are only 10 above you, you only need to bid 11 lines.

There are 25 lines and you are number 30. It doesn’t matter if there is one below you or 100. What matters is getting into the top 25.

It’s USUALLY percentage that matters. Yes, some dirtbag operators run waaaaay too many reserves. That’s still RELATIVE percentage. Apparently at Mesa, it’s above 40%. Where I work, it’s more like 80%
Whatever.....you’re the smartest guy. Ever.
