I'm no mechanic, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. I'm guessing that they left because they all want to move on, too, and while their schedules are seniority based, they don't really have "WIC" (Wrench In Command) time like pilots have, so there's less of a loss vs pilots who start over again as a FO and that much further away from getting that sweet, sweet PIC time. A mechanic can hold roughly similar career progression while jumping ship to a lateral (assuming that their goal is to work for a major/legacy), vs pilots who can sacrifice years starting all over again at another place since PIC time is what matters most.
Here's hoping it all works out for you guys!

^^ This. Building C will be fine, maybe they’ll need to drive 2 more miles to a new office park. Realistically, most people in Bldg C haven’t stepped on a Conpass aircraft within the last few years anyways. Pilots and FAs can commute. But mechanics are getting the worse deal. Can’t commute across time zones for a 9 to 5 daily.

The funny thing is I've met and talked with Compass mechanics who DO commute. I was shocked when I heard it, but there's definitely a few. Probably less than pilots and flight attendants, but they're out there.

Several MX are “rovers” and commute to mx bases and out stations for AOS birds

Are you sure they aren’t rovers? There’s one that lives in Detroit and he gets sent to the stranded airplanes.
