Compass Issues

Anyways.....so until Compass CAN NOT afford to be so picky (if and when that day ever comes), they are going to be subtle sticklers for all 3 (or at the very least a combination of any 2)......jet time, glass time, & 121 time. Good luck guys![/QUOTE]

Compass is loaded with experience. Most FO's have over 1000hrs jet PIC previous to being at Compass. Compass has already seen attrition due to Emrites, AirTran and Virgin hiring. Add the flow through and other airlines that are starting to hire and Compass will be at the back of the line looking for talent.

Yep. Having been sold to Daddy Hulas and the flow terminated for newhires, I think we're going to have a tough time attracting experienced people when *everyone* is hiring.

For orientation anyone have any hotel recommendations that have a shuttle and a decent price?

What about crashpads for the main portion of training? I plan on having my vehicle so public transit isn't a big concern.

Feel free to pm me.

The Country Inn and Suites is $45 plus tax. Just tell 'em you work for Compass. They will take you to and from the training center. As far as a crash pad I would suggest PMing mynameisjim. He is a local in MSP and rents rooms in his house for training. Good luck.

Here I am! Thanks for the referral. I might have space for one now (waiting to hear back from one), and definitely space for two starting December 6th. PM if you'd like to know more.

That's what I'm hoping for. I'm planning to wait until the end of Dec/early Jan before I apply to a few of other regionals; should have U.S. citizenship/passport by then. I've waited 12 years for a regional job, what's another few months. ;) Thanks for the info.

don't wait for citizenship. You are qualified as a perm resident.
This wait can be the difference between having a job vs. being furloughed.

Between now and January 31, 2011 there are five more new hire classes scheduled in the training plan. Recent class size has varied from a high of nine to a low of five (was supposed to be six, but one changed his mind). I don't know planned class sizes for the next classes, but I would estimate a target of six per class.

Average flight times of new hires has been roughly 2500 TT. Low end is about 1600, recent high end 9000. However that top end was an internal hire, if you disregard him, the high end drops to about 6700. I don't recall multi times, sorry.

Everyone in this hiring cycle (approx Spring 2010 onward) is prior 121, vast majority, I'd say +90% are 121 regional. Seeing plenty of Horizon and Mesa folks, followed by Mesaba, Comair, Colgan, Commutair, etc. Have not seen a pure 135 pilot in quite some time, probably over a year now.

Hope this helps. I don't know the status of interviews right now, or how many slots are filled in the remaining classes. Also, there may be more classes after January 31, but I don't know if the training plan after that date has been set yet.

Hey, do you know how many more upgrade classes there are in the plan after the 12/1 class? Most of that one (myself included) got DTW. Just want to know if there are going to be more MSP slots opening.

Anyone have new hire class over the holidays? What was the training schedule like? Do you train on Christmas or New Years?

The contract doesn't allow training over a holiday...

Agreed, I'd say ~45% have some previous TPIC, and maybe 25% have 1000 121 TPIC.

/pulled those numbers straight outta my butt

daydreamer 10-30-2010 05:49 AM

just wondering if I have not receiving "thanks, but no thanks" email so far, is that good or bad? If I have DTW cp bang drum for me, what's my chance to get on with Compass?

Coach45 10-30-2010 03:28 PM

Yeah I applied a few weeks ago and got a rejection email back a few days later. A buddy of mine, also a CA at Compass, made sure my "stuff" got pushed through after I got the email. It sounds like they got back to my friend on Friday saying I need some 121 experience. I have 1700tt and 1100multi turbine, all part 91. Like applying anywhere, having an internal rec is always a plus.

daydreamer 10-31-2010 06:15 AM

I do have about 3000 hours of 121 time, no jet time though. Have not receive anything from Compass. Do they email or call you for interview?

saxman66 11-05-2010 12:35 PM

I got a call to interview the other day. She said they are looking to fill a couple classes in December. Last I heard it was much like the DL interview but back in MSP now.

I have 1740 TT, 900 ME, currently flying 121.

I did the Delta interview at CP 5 months ago, it was a very fare interview. But I was told a couple weeks ago that it has been changed again. I was informed TSH didn't want Compass to continue that interview style. What style they chose? I have no idea. Be prepared for anything.

There are quite a few guys in training with similar hours to yours. Compass, like almost every airline, has realized that just because you have 5000 hours, doesn't mean you will be trainable or like-able.

daydreamer 11-10-2010 04:57 PM

Saxman, when did you submit your application?

I had my in now for few weeks. Have not heard a word. :(

I've had mine in since 2008. Kept updating every few months. Went to the job fair in Vegas and had a couple more internal recs. Keep sticking it out. I know how you feel.

Know of one guy interviewing in a week or so, 2 classes in DEC.

Most people here have 2-3000 hours, and previous 121 or 135. Most, that is, so there are exceptions to the rule. Everyone has at least 1500 hours though.

KITT 12-03-2010 05:55 AM

Anything new?

yancharlie 12-28-2010 04:35 PM

Hello compass fellos i just have some couple of questions?
Any ideas on how many fo's the company is planning on hiring in 2011?
What is the most junior base right now, and how long does it take to get off reserve?
Will the company continue to offer atp and pic type to new applicants since things got bought by tsa now?

Hiring for attrition - tough to guess
Well, you got your choice between MSP and DTW. MSP has ~150 crews; DTW has ~40. If you want DTW, you'd prob get it. If you want MSP, you'd prob get it in a few months.
ATP type in training is in the contract - it is not going anywhere.

BlueMoon 12-29-2010 06:06 AM

Heard a rumor yesterday that they are hiring for another class in January. After that Depends if big D hires this year.

Still get the ATP and type, though everything is done from the right seat and then you move to the left seat to do the few required items from there. Apparently that is a Recent change.

Everyone in my class and the class behind us got dtw. We're hoping only a few months of reserve since there 4 other class behind us (16 or so pilots)...but that depends how many reserves ey keep in dtw.

tsween 12-29-2010 10:31 AM

They are hiring for a pool for 2011. One jan class is rumored. I would expect to see 60-100 total hired for all of 2011.

Kinda late to the party, but I submitted an application on 12/17, got a call on 12/30 for an interview on 1/11. She said something about a class date in early February.

That's what it was for me back in mid-November.

So I'm lookin for some info on Reserve life at Compass. Got an interview next week.

Can someone point out the bad parts of your contract in reference to Reserves? Do you have hot or airport ready reserves? How much are FOs flying on reserve.

Do you have a minimum day guarantee?

Are reserves breaking guarantee?

Also, I was told they are hiring for two classes, one starting Jan 28 and the other Feb 6.

11 days off per month.

Reserves put into "SILOs" and trips are assigned based on days left on reserve (one day trip for last day of reserve, two day trip for second to last day of reserve, etc.)

Ready reserve is eight hours. AM ready reserve is treated like a one day trip while PM ready reserve is treated like a two day trip.

You can preference your RAP (reserve availability period) but they are assigned by crew scheduling based on their need not which may or may not align with your preference.

RAPs are assigned the day before you start reserve at some time after 12:00 Central time. I haven't been on reserve in a while so I can tell you exactly when they have been assigned lately. This can cause commuting issues.

RAPs are 15 hours long, though the most you can be scheduled for duty is 14 hours extend-able to 16.

Do you have a minimum day guarantee?
The min duty period guarantee is 3:30 but doesn't include RAPs.

Are reserves breaking guarantee?
It ebbs and flows...I don't know what is going on currently.

When I was on reserve I didn't fly much, but I was usually the senior reservist and worked Monday through Friday when there are fewer open trips. I was also a Captain, which has generally been staffed higher.

Also, I was told they are hiring for two classes, one starting Jan 28 and the other Feb 6.
That's good.
