But you can sleep just fine for a redeye. What you can't do is be ready for your reserve assignment at any time ready to sleep for 8 hours despite having just woken up.
Any legacy giving redeye pairings to AM reserves would have the exact same issue. When you have a trip with a redeye, then you can plan for it and do what you need to do to be rested.... and then it's your responsibility. (But they share it too when constructing the pairing.. JOINT responsibility.)

The legacies probably have something in their contract or an agreement with the company that changing from night to day duty (or vice versa) is both preceded and followed by 2 days off or some adequate amount of rest. There are even regionals with this in their contracts.

Just do what Denzel Washington does before he flys. And you'll stay awake for your inverse-circadian trip. Easy peasy!

Guys, I think we are , in compass fashion, making much more of this then then it's worth. The bottom line is this, if you are not fit to fly call in fatigued. The only question to the legality of this is a liberal interpretation of an Advisory Circular.
Has anyone with an issue with these schedules brought it up with the FT/DT committee yet? If so what was their stance?
