Default Requirements for SIC

Q for the group. I went thru the FAR/AIM and believe I have the answer, however...
Part 91 Hawker 800XP has a type rated PIC but requires 2 pilots up front. Is there a such a thing as a SIC rating for the right seat? Is it less $ for this training than a type?
I'm obviously new to the corporate world, thanks.

You don't necessarily need a SIC type rating to fly right seat in a Hawker unless you're going international. Then you would need it.

To fly right seat part 91 in a jet refer to FAR 61.55 "Second in Command Qualifications"

3 takeoffs/landings as sole manipulator, emergency proc's, etc... within 12 months before you can act as SIC with pax.

In 61.55 it talks about the TO/Landings, emer proc's, limitations, flight manual, etc...Would you just jump in the right seat to get all this done along with some sort of company ground school (vice Flight Safety), then have the chief pilot sign you off? The reason I ask is a bud of mine is taking over as chief pilot, needs someone in the right seat for about 4 months but his boss doesn't want to pay for a type rating for less than a year, and I can't commit to a year. He's checking with the current chief about this as well, figured I ask since this forum is a great source.

True, but there are many part 91 departments being hamstrung by the demands of insurance providers who often require that all crewmembers to attend "school" before flying in either seat. Check with your potential employer for their insurance requirements.

This is what happened where I work part time. They (insurance) didn't so much as care about your total times as much as the fact that you go to an approved school. All I had to do though was go to recurrent with the crew to satisfy the insurance. It basiclly got me a SIC check out, but no official SIC rating.

This brings me to a quick logging question. How do you guys that don't have a type log the time when your the "sole manipulator"? I know most places don't like to see it as PIC time, but you need to log it some way for IFR and TO's & landing currency.

For Part 91, if you aren't rated in an aircraft requiring a rating then you can't log it as PIC. You can log landings and IFR but only as SIC. If it's Part 135 you can't log PIC unless you are listed as PIC on the paperwork, even when it's your leg.

That's what I have been doing. But it does count towards my IFR currency when I am the one shooting the approaches right? I didn't really think about till the other day, I just want to make sure I can stay IFR legal.

61.57 (c) (1) says you have to shoot the approaches in the same category, but not class. So yes, it would count for IFR currency.

And just to make it clear, "sole manipulator of the controls" doesn't have to mean you're the PIC. It just means you're the one doing the flying. So you can log it, either as SIC (if you qualify), or as nothing other than just your total time.

And by the way, where'd you find this guy that's willing to give someone a type rating for the Hawker as well as at least a year's job? I need to talk to this guy
