FF/EMT on the opposite coast. We had a ton of calls initially, but they actually dwindled. State put out a ‘do not transport’ flow chart that allowed us to refuse transport to many C19 patients. And a lot of patients realized that, short of knocking on death’s door, the hospital was actually the last place they wanted to be.
That said, we have over 35,000 cases in our county alone. Confirmed, that is. It’s a hot mess. Most are staying home and suffering through it. My sister is a nurse on a C19 floor, and the overwhelming majority on vents are the elderly, obese, diabetics, etc. There are some young and otherwise healthy types, but they seem to be wildcards, for the most part.
Not a doctor, but word on the street is that there is a strong suspicion that C19 is somehow affecting blood clotting, and is causing emboli in the major organs and associated vessels. It can explain why patients are satting a little low on 3L NC one second, then are cyanotic, receiving HF O2 via ETT minutes later, satting in the basement—reminds me of a PE. Neurosurgeons are reporting a spike in ischemic strokes in young C19 patients. Wild stuff. Of course, nothing confirmed, and this is all anecdotal...so add salt to taste.

I couldn’t figure out why after intubating my patients and getting good bag compliance and tidal volume I couldn’t get the O2 and Etco2 up. Turns out the low oxygen saturation is not caused by a deficiency in the lungs but more of a lack of bloods ability to carry the oxygen. I guess as of now the key to saving lives appears to be in figuring out how to stop iron ions from breaking out of the blood cells. As you know everyday the protocols are changing

Interesting reading, sounds like ventilators are increasing the death rate. https://www.evms.edu/media/evms_publ...9_Protocol.pdf

Makes sense. Could be why they’re seeing ferritin levels skyrocket to levels that are orders of magnitude high...but I’m not very smart on that process/mechanism.
Sorry to threadjack and nerd out.

We have seen a huge up tick in people dying from preventable issues. People are having strokes and heart attacks but scared to call 911 or go to the hospital. They don’t call us until they have arrested. Honestly we are seeing more deaths from the quarantine then the virus it is suppose to defend against. It seems the “Cytokine Storm” is the biggest offender in the mortality rates in all demographics. Are you guys seeing the same?

Not to be a stickler, but it killed about 50k in April alone and was rapidly increasing until we literally shut down the economy. I'm all for opening the economy back up, but if someone tells me there's a bear in the woods, I'll at least know the risks and take precautions when I go in the woods.

These arrogant pricks tell me what is essential as if I'm incapacitated and need a custodian to handle my affairs. Look, pricks. If I'm doing it then it's essential. And then how willfully myopic do you have to be to tell me food and shelter are essential, yet earning a living to buy them isn't. They guy who sold flowers for 30 years to support his family? Not essential. The girl who paid her kids' medical bills bussing tables. Not essential. And then to top it off, they're empathetic, and wonderfully so. A man needs help and they offer their empathy instead, as if all that truly matters is one's existence in such a pure and beautiful mind as their own. **** these conceited empathetic *******s.
