TO: Comair Pilots
FROM: J.C. Lawson, Comair MEC Chairman
DATE: December 16, 2002

Your MEC met in CVG with the Delta MEC Chairman, Captain Will Buergey, at his request, to discuss preferential hiring of furloughed Delta pilots at Comair. Through this letter, I hope to dispel rumors and provide a more thorough understanding of the purpose and outcome of that meeting.

The Delta MEC, while in session at the bi-annual October Board of Directors meeting in Hollywood, Florida, formally directed the Delta MEC Chairman via resolution to meet with the Comair MEC Chairman to seek preferential hiring for furloughed Delta pilots at Comair while allowing them to retain their Delta seniority.

The general philosophy held by the Comair MEC is:

We are sensitive to the regrettable plight of all furloughed pilots in our industry.
We encourage our management to hire pilots who seek a future at Comair.
We have formally approached Comair management and our management has agreed to preferential hiring of furloughed ALPA pilots.
We agree with our company's policy that requires prospective Comair pilots to resign their seniority at their previous carrier.
We believe our Company's industry-standard policy requiring seniority resignation is sound and wise. It promotes the general health and welfare of all Comair employees and serves to protect the future of our company.
At our meeting in CVG, Captain Buergey offered preferential hiring to Comair pilots if the Comair MEC would recommend to Comair management that they hire furloughed Delta pilots and allow them to retain their Delta seniority.

Your MEC responded that hiring any pilots at Comair who do not resign their seniority at their previous carrier gives rise to numerous substantive concerns. The Delta MEC's offer of (future) preferential hiring at Delta is not sufficiently substantive to overcome those concerns and solicit Comair pilots' support. We suggested three alternative concepts, any one or all of which might lead to a mutually beneficial solution:

Relax the Delta PWA, Section 1, seat restrictions imposed upon Comair and ASA that limit our growth in 70-seat and larger airframes.
Negotiate Delta Brand Scope language with Delta management that defines all Delta flying within the Delta revenue stream to be performed solely by Delta, Comair, and ASA pilots.
Negotiate a plan for future integration of our Delta, Comair, and ASA pilots seniority lists that fairly recognizes the efforts and contributions of all.

The Comair MEC stands ready to work with the collective MEC's to bring about change that makes sense in a challenging economic environment and works for all pilots who perform flying under the Delta brand. As we stated in the Tuesday, December 3rd meeting, our door is still open.

Compass did great up until it was made known that their days with Delta were numbered (at least 2 years ago). Since then TSH seemed to be unwilling or unable to spend the money to keep reliability up. Not the crews fault. They were great.

Everyone at mainline that is happy with this is mistaken. This in no way means less rj’s. Mgmt will continue to push the scope envelope.

Been a while since I scoured that language, but doesn't the flowback provision only exist because the large RJ number was raised to accommodate the inheritance of Compass in the first place?

IOW, if DL (or Trans States either way) cancelled the flowback because of this, wouldn't that require the removal of a significant number of large RJ's from the system?

Default Delta furlough

Really though , guys and girls, I think Hell will Freeze over before Delta, American, or United ever furlough again .. I was hired at Mesaba in 94’ and got more hours and pic time than Dirt .. but even though Delta owns us and pays us and we don’t exist without Delta and they own our 900’s , I don’t have a 4 year degree and so somehow I’m not worthy 😂😂Lol ... But seriously folks , as Phil Collins would say .. of course I don’t know if anyone on this panel is old enough to know who that is and what music group he sang and played drums for , but anyway... The airlines used to have so many ups and downs and no stability in the 80’s thru the 2012 era , but now there aren’t many airlines left and flying has tripled in the last 25 years as far as planes and passengers ... so barring any apocalyptic destruction of the earth , the big 3 carriers will be taking in billions for the foreseeable future and hell will freeze over before any of these carriers ever furlough again .. those days are long gone ... which is a good thing 😎😎

ASA did shut down. All the airplanes have been transferred to SkyWest (the AS and EV tail numbers if you care to check). The only reason there were no furloughs for the pilots is that the EpxressJet pilot groups was kind enough to agree with a pilot merger, and with the economy all pilots found other jobs either at ExpressJet or elsewhere. The FAs were not so lucky and were all furloughed along with other workers.
And while the Comair group did seal their own fate the ASA group was the first one to my knowledge that made it possible for furloughed pilots to get a job at another 121 carrier without having to give up their seniority number elsewhere. This was specifically done after 9/11 to help out furloughed DAL pilots. In return the ASA pilot group got... a big fat goose egg.
The Compass pilots will be able to find jobs a without preferential hiring.

Thanks for posting that Sailing..I lost my copy of that letter years ago. If the Comair MEC had agreed to that deal..Delta would have been the first Legacy to offer preferential hiring to RJ pilots..and 1310 former furloughed DL pilots wouldn't let a former Comair pilot buy a beer in our presence.

The fact that the ASA MEC welcomed furloughed 121 carrier pilots..which was an incredibly generous offer and I'm sure those pilots furloughed after 911 and hired by ASA are unbelievably grateful..was not widely publicized and many DL pilots didnt know about it. Thank you!

Unfortunately, after the DL bankruptcy and ASA's sale to Skywest, it was too late to try to set up a formal preferential hiring program. Maybe the RJDC and their lawsuit against ALPA overshadowed the legitimate credit that ASA pilots deserved. I didnt know about it until a couple years ago.

I hope all former ASA pilots find a position that they want in this incredible hiring environment.

Every ALPA regional was offering employment to furloughed Delta pilots. We had all kinds of furloughed pilots at Mesaba, and Compass, mostly they were Northwest for obvious reasons. The ones who went for Pinnacle though, ran for the hills during training.
