Default FA Non-uniformity

The number of FA’s wearing black instead of their purple uniforms has literally quadrupled in two weeks. I think they look awful and unorganized. Most are wearing unflattering sweaters and look frumpy.

Is this because of their union drive? I know it’s not because they all have skin issues (the original random few, I understand did have actual problems)... but not the surge in the past few weeks. What say those in the know?

About half of the FA crew on my last international flight wore the "alternate" uniform. Apparently the company put something on the IFS site that authorized them to use the alternate uniform until they get a new vendor without having to show a note from a doctor as to their problem. So long story short a good many are taking advantage of the ability to go to work and through KCM (they have a letter on their site they can download) in basically black and white street clothes. It does lead to some confusion especially when they aren't wearing their wings.

I think you're being ignorant in assuming that people are just wearing B&W just because. The reality is that as time passes more and more people have adverse reactions to the chemicals in the uniform. In the past month Delta has also made it much easier to get approved for the B&W. It could be because of the union drive, it could be a feeling of guilt...who knows.

As someone who is not in the B&W but as someone that has seen the severe reactions I would suggest you simply stay in your lane and worry about what you're wearing. You wouldn't want your daughter, mother, sister etc dealing with what our colleagues are going thru.

Many of our colleagues are having serious reactions to the chemicals in the uniforms and are also having self esteem issues because of what they're going thru. A suggestion I make to you and every other pilot is this: Every time you see a flight attendant in B&W compliment them on how great they look with the B&W. I don't care if you think they look frumpy or what...they can really use the self esteem boost.

It's bad enough we have to deal with passengers making ignorant comments, we really don't need our own coworkers questioning what is going on.

Let’s be honest: if they were having issues before, they should be wearing an alternate uniform. I’m not disagreeing with this position.

But don’t tell me that the number of people affected by skin conditions has more than quadrupled since the letter went out a few weeks ago.

Many of these people have an agenda. Whether it’s KCM or their Union drive, etc. At least be honest with yourself...

When customers ask us pilots about it, I need to be informed and educated. This is “in my lane.”

I’m sorry I just find it funny when you say stay in your lane while you’re on an airline PILOT forum.

Well then you need to tell them to not tell everyone on the crew how they don't have any reactions but would rather wear the alternate uniform. That was exactly what happened on my last flight. I've flown with this guy a ton but he said it then the others on the flight just kind of laughed about it. 4 out of 10 in alternate uniforms only 2 said that they had a reaction.

Not sure if the numbers have infact "quadrupled" recently, but if so, there is clearly an alternate motivation. Like I posted earlier, I had an "alternate girl" go on and on about "purple breast milk and traces of Agent Orange"
Seriously.....

Had one young 20 something on my flight recently. With her really white complexion and really black hair(dyed).....her alternate uniform pulled off her "goth" look perfectly.

Yeah traces of Agent Orange my ass. Blow their mind and ask if it was Agent White or Purple. When they ask if you’re making fun of them, then you’ll know they don’t know crap about what they’re talking about. The average Midwest farmer has a higher level of dioxin than any Vietnam vet.

There’s an issue I don’t doubt it. But when airline rumor mills pull crap out of thin air, I can’t help but shake my head.
