Back to furloughs......
Yeah, we are going to furlough. I don't know why we are spinning around trying to figure out what we can do to stop them. Not our call. That's management. Been said here a thousands times before. They'll figure out their required manning and staff the airline accordingly. We are nothing but cost control items. they'll control as they see fit.
It's a fine mental exercise for a forum, but their are people on our seniority list that have never gone through a furlough. Perhaps we should devote more effort passing on lessons learned from previous experience. That might be more helpful for them than trying to buoy their hopes that maybe delta won't furlough. I don't expect the senior bubbas and bubbettes to float us on this with early outs. Not their responsibility. They have their own lives to take of, not ours.
I'll start. Reduce you cash outflow now. Refinance to lower interest rates anywhere you can. Sell off toys and crap you don't need. Take a minor hit if you have to, but shed that burden now. It won't be any easier 6 months from now when the entire economy is in the crapper. Get your family together and discuss how you can save money now. Cull the useless unneeded items in your budget. Hopefully you have a rainy day fund. If not start now. Should accommodate for 6 months minimum of "family operating expenses". As long as you have a job at DAL, you need to maximize your earnings until they show you the door. Again, time to have a chat with the family. Second gig? I don't know. Unless you have a current security clearance or can work your way into a .gov job, the options are not so good. Little late to go to law school.
That's just some junk off the top of my cranium. Lot's of folks on this board who have weathered multiple furloughs. Hope they chime in with their experience.

As a DAL pilot likely to get sniped by the first or second round of furloughs, i’m doing my best right now to accomplish what Phins wrote above. Save your pennies, fly a GS or two if you can, and start thinking about where you wanna apply to work October 2 2020.
(I’ve always thought it’d be cool to get an apron with a star on it at Cracker Barrel!)

Can anyone point me to info about Delta's history with furloughs? For example, do they usually cut pretty deep right off the bat, or spread it out over a longer period. When did this happen last, and how long until everyone was called back? Just trying to prepare myself for what this might look like.

I appreciate your post, and would love to hear some more folks chime in. I've only been at Delta since 2016, but I spent the prior 8 years at a regional. I actually snagged one of their last classes before their door slammed shut in the 2008 recession. Spent years as the plug reserve, assuming I would get furloughed at any moment, but never did (and was damn grateful for my job). Starting my career like that left me risk averse. I still live in my "regional" house, and we have a healthy emergency fund. Luckily the wife works in healthcare and can switch up to full time at any point. We don't have any toys or debt (aside from the house) and so I feel about as prepared as I could be at this point.

That hasnt happened..yet. I think bookings are coming in 90 days out. Blocking all middle seats for social distance
My girlfriend was looking at flights from DEN to SLC last week..$70 on DAL and SWA..this week..$500.
Everyone is waiting to see how things shake out. I really think Delta will not furlough. Positive waves, Mortiarty!
And dont listen to PopCopy..hes not Delta. Just an angry troll..

I really think its gonna be OK. After 9/11..Delta announced 1310 furloughs..400 were gone within a week. They were out for 10 yrs. Next came the displacement..I saw a MD with 1200 displacements...MD-11, L-1011, 727, 767-200, 73G..all sent to the boneyard.

The furloughed pilots that were out 10 years were by choice. Some had other things that were going well and didn’t want to return at the bottom. 6 years was the longest mandatory furlough. 2001-2007.

Was there stagnation on retirements during that furlough?
