Delta To Furlough?
#971
This is the most eye opening number I've seen. That means Delta went from 10,155 pilots to 6816 in the aftermath of 9/11(not sure if the retired guys that came back are included in that 6816). That means truly, that Delta shrunk roughly 30% in the aftermath of 9/11, not 10-15% as the 1300 guys that were furloughed would indicate. Had no one taken an early retirement it is possible 3000 could have been furloughed.
Factor in:
1. No more flight engineers
2. Explosive RJ growth replacing almost half of mainline
3. PBS costed more jobs than the loss of FEs due to the efficiency gained
None of those are factors today.

So you’re saying the glass is actually half full as opposed to half empty?!

I am 2100 from bottom and totally expect to be on the street. I’ve started to hide cash any way I can. 2nd gig and wife going to work again soon.
Furlough will happen my question is how quick after October will it get to me!

Another thing to consider is that while "two years" is the colloquial standard for ROI of furloughs from the company's POV, they may be triggered to dip below that number a bit if short to medium term revenue (and therefore cash reserves) remain critical. Some of the costs for less than 2 year furloughs could be mitigated if they use the opportunity to simplify the fleet. If the 88/90 really does completely go away (not just the fake use of the radically misused word "parked" but truly removed from the operating certificate, etc.) along with even one more type (likely a widebody) then that reshuffle could make sense foe a shorter timeline for their furlough ROI.
In any case its smart to prepare for it at any seniority. But its not a forgone conclusion especially at your seniority. And even if it does happen and get to you, there's a huge difference between a plug furlough and a plug plus 2100 furlough.

With the blocking of middle seats it'll be interesting if the regional and mad dog model will be economical. If your seats are two and two, you lose half your lift, if it's three and three you only lose a third. If the trend continues to keep people further apart, who knows, we might need more pilots to fly the same number of passengers. Like folks have said, it's a crap shoot.
