Cargo folks hit the road for 14 days at a time.

You must be new to piloting.
and I'll bet anyone at CB would trade places in a nanosecond

Let's say we furlough 15-20% this time, with retirements over the next 5 years where do you think callbacks occur? Faster than the 9/11 furloughs I suppose? I'm at the very bottom of the list pretty much so I will be first round.

Quote: I wasn't on property back then, but Delta contract comparison says "over 1300". I believe I remember reading the highest TK number was TK+1265

TK was seniorty list plug at 10,155....first to furlough and last to recall.

Roughly 12.5%

Yeah, we are going to furlough. I don't know why we are spinning around trying to figure out what we can do to stop them. Not our call. That's management. Been said here a thousands times before. They'll figure out their required manning and staff the airline accordingly. We are nothing but cost control items. they'll control as they see fit.

It's a fine mental exercise for a forum, but their are people on our seniority list that have never gone through a furlough. Perhaps we should devote more effort passing on lessons learned from previous experience. That might be more helpful for them than trying to buoy their hopes that maybe delta won't furlough. I don't expect the senior bubbas and bubbettes to float us on this with early outs. Not their responsibility. They have their own lives to take of, not ours.

I'll start. Reduce you cash outflow now. Refinance to lower interest rates anywhere you can. Sell off toys and crap you don't need. Take a minor hit if you have to, but shed that burden now. It won't be any easier 6 months from now when the entire economy is in the crapper. Get your family together and discuss how you can save money now. Cull the useless unneeded items in your budget. Hopefully you have a rainy day fund. If not start now. Should accommodate for 6 months minimum of "family operating expenses". As long as you have a job at DAL, you need to maximize your earnings until they show you the door. Again, time to have a chat with the family. Second gig? I don't know. Unless you have a current security clearance or can work your way into a .gov job, the options are not so good. Little late to go to law school.

That's just some junk off the top of my cranium. Lot's of folks on this board who have weathered multiple furloughs. Hope they chime in with their experience.
Two things to add (been through two furloughs/shutdowns); first, if you are at risk of a furlough, take out a HELOC if you can. It can make for a low cost emergency fund. Second, do not ever, EVER draw from your 401k to pay bills. You will never make up the loss. A 401k/retirement plan is protected from creditors.

Be safe.

For reference, he was finishing up recall class when I started. His number when he lost the plug status finally would have been 6816 in Feb 2007.

1310 total furloughs at fDAL..Mike B. to Troy K.

Mike and I did a 4-day FO/FO requal in the 737-200 even though we were furloughed off the MD-88. But because we had flown the 73N within 35 mos..we got the short requal.

Still..very lucky to have been recalled after so many were still on the street. Thanks to Troy K. for his work as furlough coordinator at DALPA..and thanks for the COBRA from all the Delta pilots still on the line!!

It is a long and costly road to displace, train to another displacement, and furlough 1310 pilots. I think pent up demand, lower load factors to ensure social distancing/lower ASM's will lift prices..and generate enough revenue across all the fleets to prevent what happened after 9/11.

I know..I must be enjoying some High West Double Rye..!

Quote: While I agree, there are some large logistical hurdles. Most pax airlines are highly adverse to cargo except as add on belly freight to routes they'd be doing anyway. That, coupled with a lack of dedicated cargo fleets, severely limits what they can do in the sector. There is temporary opportunity right now though because so much of that add on belly freight is gone with the mass pull down of pax flight worldwide.

What I'd be interested in seeing is a comparison of freight capability for a pax configured plane compared to its cargo configurated plane. What is the cargo/revenue ceiling for belly vs dedicated cargo vs belly and floor cargo for pax AC?

It'll be interesting to see if any of the pax airlines gravitate towards dedicated cargo ops to some extent as this progresses even during the recovery period. I doubt it will happen though. There is, afterall, no money in cargo as we all know.
Just flew an A 350 LAX-ICN with zero pax, 17K below deck. Going back will have cargo funneled from PVG. I don’t think we’re doing it just for fun. AC pulled some seats from a few 777-300s to carry some cargo load on the main deck as well. There is some creative thinking in play around the industry.
