9 month CQ cycle. Sometimes go a month early or a month late. You’ll pretty much do CQ at random months over the years.

That’s a good thing I guess.

QUESTION:

For a hypothetical new hire who wants to be based in DTW, but might rather fly the 73N or 320...

...would a new hire bid favoring 73N or 320 in ANY location be the smarter move compared to just putting 717B @ DTW at the top of the preference list?

With monthly AEs dropping, how long (ballpark) would that new hire have to wait until successfully moving to DTW in the Guppy or Bus?

(Late September class start date / middle of the road SSN last-4)

Thanks in advance!

The bulk of conversions for an AE occur 3 months after the AE. The current AE open now has most conversions in December. So depending on the timing of your class date and how long initial training takes you’re looking at 1-2 months on the line before your switch to DTW would occur. Is that time forced commuting worth being able to fly the 737/320 vs not ever commuting on the 717? Only you can decide that for yourself.

Keep in mind, while you might get it on the first AE, there’s no guarantee. I know plenty of guys that have had to wait more than one (including someone I wrote a rec for this summer who had to wait for his second to move).

So really, are you willing to commute for up to 5-6 months, potentially?

Good advice - thank you for the info, gents.

I currently live in the Western US, far from any major hub airports. My thought it a little time based out of LAX, SEA, or even SLC might be an easier commute while I work on the move home to DTW. Knowing it might be a 5 or 6 month delay is great info to help make that decision.

Thanks again.

Probably better off commuting to west coast bases or MSP. Commuting from the west to the Eastern time zone is rough, and on the 73 specifically not a ton of commutable trips in DTW compared to other bases it seems.
