Two years ago we were about to witness over half the jets in the country park on any runway and taxiway they could spare.

A year ago we were starting to get the blocks in place to tentatively rebuild.

Yesterday we saw people get awarded captain in a jet that doesn’t have a T-tail who were hired after thanksgiving. We saw people who probably hold a furlough letter in their files become ER captains. This wasn’t even the “big big” either.

We’re arguing over Ali Baba??

I think having pilots upgrade that are in the 95th percentile of our seniority list is an embarrassment. It shows how poor our quality of life has gotten. No one would rather be a first officer vs captain. Our PWA is sorely lacking.

Nearly every airline is going thru the same thing. United had unfilled 737 Captain postions. New hire Widebody postions. FedEx has 1 year 757 Captains. Did all these premier jobs get poor QOL all of a sudden? No. This is what happens when there is a Tsunami of movement happening in the industry

You’re both right. It’s a perfect storm.

He will enjoy commuting to reserve for most likely a few years, and he will hate his life, no matter what his “look at how great I am” posts say.
But....he will get to wear a 4-stripe horse blanket the rest
of his time at Delta and that's kinda cool.

He won’t need his jacket because he will always be flying the WATRS to STI or SDQ

I got to give the dude some credit. When I was 25 I wasn’t anywhere close to mature enough to be a van admiral. All I cared about at 25 was going out and chasing tail.

Agree. Sorta.

Grant PSC to pilots commuting to the NYC base, offer a hotel on both ends for non commutable trips, and the NYC captain pool would get senior pretty quickly.

Then again, “We hire captains”. So if the junior pilots want to deal with 5-10 years of reserve and/or awful NYC trips, there’s really no reason for the company should care who volunteers for the slots.

More power to the awarded pilots. Timing is everything (which is to say “lucky bastards”).
