So... now that we know inflation is ticking up at 8+%/year, what is an acceptable pay increase for our contract?
And.... Our contract was amendable in 2019. We are behind 3+ years. There is no Contract 2022. Assuming 8% inflation for 2022 and a contract effective 12 months from today, A321A should be $347.36 and A321B should be $236.83. That's just to keep our 2019 earnings unchanged. A5S |

According to usinflationcalculator.com, 12 year A321A and 73NA pay in 2019 ($286) is worth $321.63 today. A321B and 73NB pay in 2019 ($195) is worth $219.29 today.

A5S Just a small point of reference, we got our last raise on Jan 1, 2019. I think we need to compare today to Jan 1, 2020 which is where I would’ve expected new pay rates to be effective at. Overall, I agree with your point. I also think we need a good bump above inflation raises if only because this is a pilot’s market right now. No need to give them freebies. Personally, I want better gains in QOL over pay rates, but it’s all intertwined so I’ll let the NC do what they do. |

You asked the question in the middle of an APC food fight, but yes, that is mostly reasonable. There is no minimum amount of flying you have to keep on your schedule, and I can count 5 different ways off the top of my head to get rid of a trip without having to pick up another one. Each has it’s own set of rules and its own time and place for use. Staffing is super tight right now which removes a lot of flexibility but it won’t be like that forever.
Dropping a 4-day trip can be difficult when one is junior with a crappy 4-day trip on his line. If you don’t want it most other guys probably don’t want it either. So you might prepare to drop your -best- 4-day trip in order to get time off as a junior pilot. But take heart, your bidding power improves every month and you’ll be able to hold shorter trips if you wish, which are both easier to drop and/or fly. Moreover, one’s schedule is rarely constrained to 4x4day trips so if time off is your top priority, it may happen faster than you think. Another element not discussed is actual CREDIT time on your awarded rotations, which may be more relevant to your question but is a whole separate can of worms and difficult to cover on text- only forums. Good luck and welcome to the party. |

This is BS. My house that I bought for half a million 7 years ago is now going for over $1.2 million. This is a small 4 bedroom house. Nothing special about it. I bought it back when I making just over $200k per year (ps included in that number). 7 years later, I'm making just over $200k per year. Everything is more expensive. I feel bad for our new hires. Without massive raises, they will all be house poor....unless they wait for the market to crash.
Our new hires will be just fine. If money is an issue they will be able to upgrade on the 717/220/320/73N almost immediately for the foreseeable future. Who I truly feel sorry for is the working class folks making 100k and below earners that are trying to purchase a home to build wealth and stability in this environment. I don't always agree with Trip's posts, but I commend his optimism. Reading some of the miserable posts on this site and others, you'd think we were all a couple of days from dumpster diving to stay alive. This is still a pretty good job, with very good pay. That post about boats, fly-in communities, private schools and the rest I've read before. I suspect it was merely copied and pasted from some other rant posted elsewhere. And it is complete horse hockey from the first word to the last. Any captain at DAL, and most FOs can do all that now. Doesn't take multiple GS. The "good ol' days" weren't always that, and sometimes we all tend to look back with filtered memories.
So Trip, keep up the positive vibes--just don't get into the realm of Pollyanna vibes where all is perfect and nothing needs to be improved. I like the late sci fi author Robert Heinlein's quote. “Don't ever become a pessimist; a pessimist is correct oftener than an optimist, but an optimist has more fun--and neither can stop the march of events.” New hire hotels provided New hire uniform allowance. Your house statement bears no weight without details about the market you're in. Based on what you described you must be a red hot market like Austin. Certaintly not ATL. Personally I've made over 300k a year since year 4 at Delta(2014 hire). Make no mistake, there is room for improvement and we will get it due to Delta's staffing crisis, but let's not exaggerate here. This is a great job with a fantastic lifestyle and benefits.

Tamp down expectations? Pilots have all the leverage. The Union is doing its work. Sections are closing quickly with industry leading agreements. One does not need to pose as if our job is horrible to extract gains. This is a simple demand curve exercise. Record demand for flights, record shortage of pilots.

I know about the LCA section that the company desperately needs, but what other sections have been closed and please list the industry leading areas. I haven’t had much time to keep up on my 10 hour layovers.
