Right, but if it weren't, you wouldn't have a backup to the jumpseat flight in question either (mechanical, crew duty, etc).
That said, I always thought that was a CBA thing not an FOM thing. We should have codified it many contracts ago, but "we didn't think they'd do that"...

We had a chance to show the company that we did not need a backup flight or the two hour requirement. Sadly we could not put on our big boy pants and use some common sense getting to work when we had the near perfect policy. The company went back to what works. Hard to blame them.

That is completely irrelevant to requiring a 2 hour time between flights. That wasn't tested. In fact, the UTC policy doesn't "require" 2 hours (some CPOs argue it does) and many, many pilots have made it to work just fine using that policy. And that Florida meltdown month is a small blip in what was otherwise an incredibly reliable method of commuting. Sure, I'm sure some CPO would site incomplete data to defend their unwillingness to change it post sunset. The fact is, during the most operationally disruptive period in our history, there was only marginal operational disruption caused by commuters.

This is a ridiculous argument. Were there a few instances where pilots irresponsibly commuted? Yes. A lot of it was during the Jax center meltdowns and Delta staffing meltdowns. I'd argue there would have been commuting issues there regardless.

Although a by-product of this is probably why they are having to test out their virtual bases…

The biggest abuse and “irresponsible” commuting practices were by FAs (and I do have some second hand knowledge in all this). And you know that if we get something they are going to give it to the FAs, which they absolutely didn’t want to do.

Now an outlier for sure, but I can easily see some who might PS out of NYC/BOS to a smaller city to get a inexpensive hotel room, then PS back in the morning for their next trip or A day.

Yup. I flew with one who told me she used PS twice a day.. every day she flew. She would PS from her local airport to ATL, fly a standup overnight, then PS back home (short flights), sleep at home. Do the same things that night, do it again. Rinse.. repeat.

One guy poops his pants, we all have to wear diapers. That's how it (stupidly) works.
