Sure. Cutting the top marginal rate by a half point and slowing illegal immigration to just a million a year is "far right" now.

If that's what you think the Overton Window is talking about, you're also uninformed.

I had not heard of the Overton window until this thread. Thank you APC!?

Honest question: How has this window moved right in your opinion?

It's moved appreciably in both directions and it's become a feedback loops of sorts. The more it moves right the more it moves left the more it moves right. And we can sit here on social media and scream our opinions without ever having to actually talk about our points with anyone.

The Overton window isn't moving as much as you think. The media's characterization of political sentiment is what is moving. The further left/right they appear (within reason), the more engagement they generate from the middle ground who thinks they are too extreme left or right.

The Righteous Mind by Jonathan Haigt (2012) analyzes the psychology of morality and how different cultures perceive morality differently. It gets into both politics and religion.

Don't be ignorant. The chances of someone accomplishing what Musk did with limited resources are very small. My point was he didn't come from "nothing". He didn't start from zero. Next time you have a 4 hour sit at the Mother Ship read Outliers.

Overton Window (fiction) by Glen Beck was actually a fun read and first time I'd ever heard of the term. Now I hear it a lot.

Just to clarify, Glen wrote about the relatively obscure political science term. While the book was fiction, the term is not. It was used primarily by think tanks like the Heritage Foundation to inform conservatives about acceptable political stances.

Below is a quote and a link from Maye Musk, Elon’s mom. Sounds like he had limited resources to me.

I brought my kids up as a single mother with very little money, and we survived. We used to live in a rent-controlled apartment in Toronto with Elon on the couch. It took three weeks to clean, then I saved to buy $5 sheets. Eventually I bought beds, then a computer, and after that chairs – you can always work on the floor. I cut their hair, gave them mani-pedis, wore $19 shoes to walk the runway. You don’t need massages to be happy.”
