First, I think a lot of people equate the double breasted with looking professional because in order to wear it you have to button it up every single time you put it on. Wearing it unbuttoned is just a floppy mess and no one does it. It’s much easier to go unbuttoned with a single breasted which I guess can come across as less professional looking. But…
No where, and I mean no where, in the business world is a double-breasted jacket the symbol of professionalism. No one who wears a business suit in a professional setting, from CEOs to senior managers to salespeople to anyone else, chooses a double breasted jacket. I’ve never seen Ed or JL in a double breasted jacket. I’m not sure what the dress code is on the 4th floor, but I can bet that every person on that floor who is wearing a jacket is going single breasted, even flight ops guys who are not in the pilot uniform. A well-fitted, tailored single breasted jacket is the professional norm. We are following some norm that was in place when legal segregation was still a thing. Time to update to todays vision of a professional look.

As a rule, the double-breasted suit is appropriate anywhere a single-breasted suit goes. While it is considered more formal than the single, its bold styling in the warmer months – as seen with the peacocks at Pitti Uomo – the double-breasted is now the choice with more flair.Jan 3, 2021

I’ve less than 5 years left and I’ll spring for the single breasted jacket ASAP, if for no other reason than it’ll bother the type that’s in love with the horse blanket.

I like it though, and favor no change. It’s no less comfortable than any other suit, and I think it looks good.
