They started a 737 base to target WN pilots who don’t want to fly the 737 anymore?

I'm hearing Des Moines or even possibility of a sweet spot Souix City. Awesome!

A city doesn’t need to be a hub to be a pilot base. There are probably 6 or 7 different cities that could be single-fleet pilot bases at Delta without any changes to our network. It would take a different management philosophy than the one we currently have here though.

Isn’t ALPA what holds up the opening of additional pilot bases? I always assumed the FAs have additional bases for some sort of gain in scheduling efficiency

Yes. Because pilots eventually move between aircraft. And aircraft are added or subtracted from bases. This is the carrot.

Seems logical. They don’t go to United now since they don’t have to commute but they would go to United for the opportunity to commute in the future, but only if they retain the ability to drive to work now in a base they may not be able to hold.

Airline management.

Arent FA’s that call in sick at the smaller bases required to find a replacement on their own? I seem to remember a FLL/MIA FA telling me that once. It’s hard to cover sick calls in small bases, so I doubt we will see any here.

It’s not much different from operating a small category in an existing base. They’d either staff the new categories with an appropriate number of reserves, or cover sick calls by DHing reserves from other bases and/or green slips.

There have been several examples of ultra-small categories throughout our existing base structure where the company has done this for years.

They are only new 737s bases for UA in LAS & MCO. WN pilots would still fly 737 if they trade airlines.
