I'm shocked at some of the responses. How does a professional airline pilot not know flight plan alternates are for dispatch purposes? Do folks really think they are diverting to MCO or JAX on those days with really storms forecast in ATL?

BHM, CHA, HSV, etc… can fill up fast in a divert scenario. It’d be wise to keep the fuel for the planned alternate when ATL has storms rolling in. Just my opinion.

If you accept a poor alternate choice that’s on you. The purpose of dispatch is to satisfy the crew’s safety concerns, not pencil whip for the FAA and Delta’s accountants.
