Default Reserve Grey Area Ins

What are folks using until they hit Tricare coverage at 60? I’m planning to use one of the HSA options with the FSA. Family does have some medical costs.

This post doesn't mention whether you are able to keep TRICARE as a retiree or TRICARE Reserve Select or if you are ETSing and won't have access to TRICARE...

See the theme above? Keep and use TRICARE as your healthcare insurance. It is far, FAR superior to anything Delta provides and it is being diluted at a much, MUCH slower rate. Use the Delta Dental and Vision insurance they offer...tho, those are being diluted quickly. I was just "fired" by my dentist because our Dental insurance doesn't even cover his costs, unfortunately. He said it is surprising that Delta is lagging, by as much as it is, other providers.

Delta offers a TRICARE supplement. I bought it for 2 years and it wound up being such a PITA and reimbursement was marginal...so I dumped it.

Good luck and welcome!!

Default Tricare Supplement

Last time I looked, the supplement was running a little under $3K for the year, but the Tricare Max Catastrophic Cap (at the time) was only $3K per family (up to $4K now for Tricare Select). My family is pretty healthy other than just the routine doc appointments so the supplement didn't make sense for me because it would ensure I paid the full $3K a year when right now we end up paying less than that just in co-pays and prescriptions.

The Tricare supplement isn’t quite that expensive, but it definitely is a PITA. I hit the cap every year, even with the new higher cap, which is over $4k in 2023. it pays for itself.

That said, I’m seriously considering jumping to the MOAA-sponsored Tricare supplement, but last I looked at that in depth, they had a 6-month pre-existing condition carveout.

I took TRICARE standard (I think it’s called select now) and a MOAA supplement years ago when I retired, never looked back. MOAA has been good, the connection between TRICARE and MOAA is seamless. I have never filled out any claims form for anything with MOAA. Had major surgery last year, less hassle and expense than the previous year with the delta dental or vision insurance… YMMV.

I was just lamenting earlier in the thread how I would like to participate/recover some of the savings that I bring to the medical coverage table at Delta. If I didn’t have TRICARE, I would be on one of the HSA or DPMP plans, consuming $ resources, converting it into healthcare services. The MOAA supplement costs me about $80/mo, that would be a nice place to start. Or allot each pilot a given dollar amount to purchase all benefits , cafeteria style, there are many companies that handle it this way. Again, I don’t have a beef with how Delta handles it, it’s smart business to have a portion of employees that don’t tap health care resources.

Point of order: Non-mil employee here and DAL saves 100% on me as well. Haven't used a dime of DAL health insurance "coverage" in nine years here.

Honest question.
They do have this option. I forego the insurance altogether.
