The problem with going back to either DXB or BOM from either JFK or ATL is all the No Fly airspace and Russian airspace you have to avoid to get in/out of there.

Just for fun open up your Flight Deck Pro app and start a "New Flight" and put in KATL to OMDB (Dubai) or VABB (Mumbai) then zoom in on the areas around the blue line going through the Middle East and Russia.

Until we are allowed to fly through Russia again there's almost no way to get in/out of either Dubai or Mumbai. If Trump were to end the war in Ukrain on Day One, like he promised, then maybe we could operate to Mumbai. Dubai still has some issues with other no fly zones.

After that Malaysian 777 was shot down over the Crimean peninsula we started going way to the west, through Saudi Arabia and then up through Egypt but now much of that airspace is showing No Fly due to the war in Israel.

Wondef if it would be a suitable -1000 route?

How does United operate UA164 daily to Dubai?
American has AA 292 to New Dehli, close enough to Mumbai.
I don’t think it has anything to do with politics and we just require the delivery of 1000s to make the numbers make sense.

Unless we're allowed to fly through some of those No Fly zones there's going to have to be a lot of dog legs and extra miles flown to get there. Back when we did fly the 777 to BOM and DXB, and then we stopped, we were told it was because Air India drove down the yields on the Mumbai flights and because we lost the Halliburton contract (to United) on the Dubai flight.

Halliburton was booking 50 seats a night from Houston to Dubai, on Delta they had to go through ATL of course, but UAL started a nonstop from IAH-DXB and they got the Halliburton contract, and we stopped flying DXB.

Now with the wars in Israel and the Ukrain there's so much No Fly airspace around there I don't know if you can get there. Of course both Emirates and Air India are not involved with the Russian Airspace embargo like we are, so they can get in/out no problem.

US DOT should stipulate airlines flying to US airports avoid the no fly airspace. Be pretty cool if they did.

I guess you can take a look at their routes on Flight Aware and see which way they're going. I know going over Saudi Arabia instead of Russia added about an hour to our DXB-ATL flight after the Malaysian flight was shot down and that was before the war in Israel, which we over flew often back then but is off limits now.

I just did look at those two routes on Flight Radar 24 and they're taking the long way, no doubt. The 350s we have now should be able to fly those same routes as neither one is as long as JNB and both DXB and BOM are at sea level, not 5,500' like JNB.

Maybe UAL and AA are paying a boatload of money to overfly some of those territories and Eddie Bear doesn't want to?

I'm not too familiar with the 350, as I understand we have a few different MTOWs? The original, the updated one with wing twist, and now the new NPS ones that also have the lower seating configuration (understand those are siloed mostly to CPT/JNB)? If the rumored 40x -1000 fleet comes to fruition as GL speculated, that is a lot of capability entering the fleet. Many will probably help add seats to HND/ICN/LHR as needed, but should also open up some new intersting routes. I'd be curious if we order more "smaller" (not -1000) widebodies like the 339 or 359. How much more does a 359 cost to run over a 339? I'd have to dig up the table DL published in a DOT paper a few years back.

edit. Found it here, slide #25
https://downloads.regulations.gov/DO...tachment_1.pdf

For brevity, the fuel burns listed are-
763: 1,596 (gal/hr)
339: 1,593
359: 1,817
332: 1,829
772: 2,314

Lots of uninformed or short memories that forgot that was going and planned.

Project 2025 makes a point with respect to that.

"Specifically, so long as U.S. carriers are not able to fly over Russian airspace, the U.S. should not
allow foreign carriers serving markets in East Asia and South Asia to enjoy a competitive advantage by continuing to allow them to fly to the U.S."

Give up the commitment. Entirely different lifestyle when you live in base. You have many to choose from.
