Gotta disagree. I don’t mean this as a challenge at all, but If one understands how to manipulate the radar, a TON of additional information and SA can be gained. Simply understanding the 60:1 rule will give you an idea of tops/returns at an altitude just by using the tilt and doing the math. (-1* tilt at 80 miles = 8000 feet below you) It’s just one tool in the box, but the auto mode can often show irrelevant ‘cells’ similar-looking to legitimate threats, especially at range.

20 years of military use of radar also gives a level of comfort an understanding with instances to use manual modes. There is some decent info in the FCTM about wx/turbulence/radar, and used to me more in the Vol2

Archie Trammel would not agree.

Two words: tilt down.

Somehow I almost never run into these "line of storms" scenarios on transcons. It's almost always anytime I go north or south of ATL.

Lately flying into and out of the DR feels like the asteroid scene from Empire Strikes Back.

Every 5-10 days, a mid latitude cyclone passes across the country. About once a month one of them has a cold front that stretches from CLE to IAH, and if conditions are right, you get thunderstorms across the entire front. If those storms are strong enough, the hit ATL and NYC and we have to “plan our commutes accordingly,” get re-routed, and then fail to get paid correctly.

That’s another good example of a place you can’t always avoid storms. Sometimes there’s just a cell every 40 miles, so there is no way you can deviate 80 miles away from a single cell.

On topic but also slightly off... What's the obsession with pilots here always wanting to turn the radar off as soon as they can? Think we're getting radiated? Trying to 'save' equipment life? Maybe it's coming from the military but the idea of turning it off never came up

The worst thing they invented was “forced stby”.
