Yep. When I joined (early 2000s)I had to show proof of commissioning. My dad being a retired W3 meant nothing.
Now? "Did you briefly date someone whose dad was in the Cajun Navy during hurricane Katrina? You qualify! "

100% agree. Growth for the sake of growth isn't a sustainable business model. USAA has exceeded the optimal size for their intended customers. I suspect the company now captures a much smaller share from lots of customers vs being the primary bank, insurance and investment option for a smaller group of HVCs. Oh well not my problem any more.

That's pretty much all I have with them. They divested themselves of their brokerage years ago, dropped motorcycles years ago and I dropped them after I had to fight them for FIVE months to get anything close to FMV for my car that was totaled when I got rear ended while stopped by a dump truck.
Like their initial offer was $3200 for a 4Runner with a 15k trade in offer and 19k or so private party sale value. I had a dealer offer me $14k for it when I bought my wife's new car, and I elected to keep it as my airport car.
And between them and Delta attaching themselves to my court case, I got less than $8k out of a $50k court settlement from the trucking company. (DL took 20k or so, USAA took 15k, lawyer took 7k or so.
USAA can F off now. Once my truck is paid off (they were doing a subprime like1.8% auto loan as long as it auto pays out of USAA checking) I'm shutting my banking with them down as well.

They really aren't even good for checking. In the early 00s, they were one of the only banks doing internet banking. In 2026, you can't get any number of bank accounts with internet access, free ATM fees, mobile deposit, etc, that is a much better quality than USAA. There are also plenty of banks now that offer high yield checking accounts as well. The only reason I stayed as long as I did is because I had them so long and switching bank accounts was "the unknown" I didn't want to have to deal with. I'm so glad i did.
Plus, this isn't a good look either: https://finance.yahoo.com/news/just-...102500500.html
