I'm glad they don't, I find it exceedingly annoying. At my prior airline they had to call once an hour, it was the worst. i also fail to see the big issue about calling them if we need anything, and it's not like we call them to check on them either

No one is arguing they want an hourly check in. The point is that some actually care enough to check. And generally those are the better FA’s.

The FA facilitator in my DCLC course ( married to one of our pilots) Looked us straight in the eye , pointed at the whole class and said “ We need you to be the Captain!! Do not let them get away with this ! She was thoroughly annoyed with how this has been a problem ( at least domestic) and how it has continued since Covid. They now have a program where mng/trng FA’s are riding in the back during flights anonymously to spot this faulty service.

I also had two new FA trainees on a turn out of ATL the other day. I briefed the A that it would be bumpy in the climb and I'd call him when it was okay to get up. Which I did, and I presume he did. A few minutes later he called me back and said, "The OE instructor wants to know when it will be safe to get up because its bumpy in the back."
I laughed out loud. It was occasional light chop AT WORST. So that is EXACTLY how new FAs are being trained.

Funny, that same person said the same thing when I did the course 2 years ago.

I like the ones that check in before they do their second service on transcons. Good time to get up ans use the restroom/stretch and we dont interrupt their second service. Win win in my mind. But id say less than 20% do that.
