Well, I must have missed something somewhere. You are going to have to point this one out to me. When and where did the company or anyone in a management position say the 717 would be coming to mainline if the TA did NOT pass?

All I ever saw was conjecture from line pilots that we would get them anyway if the TA didn't pass.

They don't need but about 2 weeks to spool up the hiring/training pipeline.

In 1985, Delta had not hired any pilots for 4 years. I was called on a Monday to come to an interview on Tues/Weds, hired on Thursday. I was sitting in class on Friday morning. Yeah, 1 week, start to finish, and that's without cell phones or the internet. 6 weeks later I was on the line.

They went from zero to hiring 24 pilots every 2 weeks, while still in contract negotiations, because ALPA finally said NO MORE OVERTIME and guys stopped answering their phones.

Many engineers had 200+ hr. bow waves and were being met at the jetway by a gate agent, on block in, with a 'reroute' trip assignment. So they started dropping the aft airstairs asap on parking, then they would run out the back, across the ramp, to the parking lot. Delta had to start hiring or cancell flights. The 'rumor' we heard in new hire school was, they were only going to hire 200, then merge with North West, then furlough us newbies.

Today we are overstaffed, the complete opposite from 1985. I doubt we'll se any hiring until they are 'short' of pilots, why else would they want extra bodies on the payroll? Anyone see any 'short' categorys out there? We still have 25 a day on reserve, with 6 required in my category, and that's after they have displaced 40 from each seat in the last 3 A/E's.

Timbo, I thought of one category and went and took a look. Tomorrow, the DC9B in ATL has 22 guys on reserve, 16 of them or 73%, have 0 hours.

They're pooling for the 717 for sure. In house.

True. We can and have run the operation much leaner in terms of overtime being the norm. Today, with the cost of healthcare and retirement accounts, it's cheaper to pay us overtime than it is to hire new bodies. As some have been saying on here, the real impetus to hiring will only come with a global economic recovery and expansion. Until then, my personal belief is that DL will just muddle along with what we've got pilot wise, even shrinking slightly to avoid having to start the hiring cycle. But at some point, the retirements kick in and they will have to begin some sort of replacement program. I don't think that will be a player for another 2 years at the very least.

Denver would be better off if they had Tebow.

But I bet they still win.

The new mil leave tracking program supports this theory. They want the pilots they have to work more, rather than hire more people. I don't mean this in a bad way, they are following userra...just saying I can see where they are going between this and our new more efficient contract.
