Have you compared the total number of commercial multi-engine land certificates awarded per year to the total number of upcoming retirements in the US? After we decimate the regionals, we're gonna be left hiring UAV operators. Sorry about your computer.
I completely understand what you're saying. We have been greatly singled out in terms of being in the midst of a long term career depression. I think we all understand the economics of what's going on though. The wages at the majors were driven up when there wasn't a surplus of qualified pilots. As much as people may say this isn't a law of supply and demand it is. In 2010, Delta had 11,000 applicants, 5500 of whom were competitively qualified. They selected only 150 or so from the street. If they couldn't pick the needle out of the haystack they weren't trying hard enough.
As for who or who didn't make the decision to reset wages in the post bk era, that's true if you were hired in 1998 or before. After that, look at what a career has looked like. Not so great, right? But look at what a career that started in 2010 looks like. We aren't immune to the concept that we were selected out of 11,000 applicants. While I'm happy to be making over $100 an hour now, the company continues to grossly undervalue us as a whole. Unfortunately the company hasn't had to play the game where they have to buy quality. Quality arrived at their front door in droves. That being the crux of my argument. For as "bad" as it is, we haven't driven away the applicant pool. However - when it dries up - expect a large raise. I hope.....

You are saying we will be pushed up from the bottom? I think you are putting the cart before the horse. The magnetic attraction of the top pay and progression to the top pay is what draws people into the job.

I only bring up the WAL thing because it seems to be a key component of people's argument with regard to what our west coast route structure should look like. They obviously were a nobody though. Of all the west coast airlines in the 80s, 1 remains. That doesn't surprise me at all. I mean look what happened to PSA.

Yup this web board is a total waste of time.
What was incorrect about my rationale? The uncomfortable truth of it? I talk to pilots all the time that are north of 50, mortgaged to their eyeballs and flying until they are sick. They are certainly not ready to line up for a job action. 60-40 yeah, we are tigers.

I can only speak from my perspective. First year pay had zero bearing on where I applied...zero. I am glad our new hire pay has gone up, I took $25K out of savings my 1st year.

When you look at the last of the Mohicans at Comair, or the guys at Mesa that could hold 747A slots with their years of service, or any other really senior guy on a seniority list that isn't making what we do, a common thread is that they couldn't take the pay cut at year 1 at a major, so they just never left. So while it had no bearing on where you applied, I certainly wouldn't have given Delta much thought had they not paid more first year than where I was at. After almost a decade puttering around in RJs I was deep in debt. So I get it. Different strokes for different folks, but I get it.
All I'm saying is that going forward the majority in place now, is rapidly going to get replaced by the minority that's in that stack of 11000 apps. And if you aren't setting a good example about why we should be getting paid more, SJS, and the decimated RJ contracts are going to make $102.02 at third year pay look incredible. Perspective perspective perspective.
All I'm saying, in direct response to your statement about guys mortgaged to their eyeballs is that people need to be aware of their surroundings and their actual (not perceived) value to their employer. Good decision making is tough when the money is flowing, but I'd rather take a series of stable, metered pay increases, than swing for a home run, only to see the home run overturned by instant replay. See what I'm getting at?
