No offense to you personally, but I just got done flying with a captain who educated me on the PERP guys (think that's how it's spelled). Senior captains who came back to fly the line pre-bankruptcy after retiring and taking their payouts all while we were furloughing junior guys. All while maintaining their pay and seniority.

Though a short period of time, my stomach still turned knowing DALPA would sign off on this with an LOA.

Age 65 is also widely recognized by most as another source of career stagnation over the past 5 years.

Personally, I think our pilot group has a hard enough time negotiating things for ourselves, never mind negotiating things for pilots who have long left and retired.

Again, I don't begrudge you personally, but I think you may have struck a tender nerve for a lot of junior guys with your suggestion.

And I do wear boxers, but I'm out of gold bond. ;)

Perps were actually Post Retirement Pilots, or PRP's, pronounced Perp.

Most (but not all) of them were line check airmen and wide body Capts. The logic to allowing them to "Retire" but continue to fly, was because so many LCA's retired, they were short. So the LCA's were allowed to perform IOE's and TOE's, until their replacements were trained.

I think it took about a year for the longest serving ones to finally be "Retired", but in the mean time, the Perps were flying a whole bunch of green slips!

They were only around for about a year right?

Yes. It was a program that was approved ostensibly to keep from having to park some 777's while new guys were in training.

(I think I used that word in the right context! :D )

That is the same old B.S. that every senior pilot, now retired, used to completely undermine our career. "Someday, you'll be there". Uh huh. Well, for those of us left after the scope sales, retiree class action lawsuits, lump sum disbursements, furloughs, PRP's, age 65, worthless stock option grants, the list goes on... Someday ain't coming for us.

You enjoyed a great career, and I'm happy for you. I'm sure when you were an active pilot, you non rev'd anywhere, anytime in first class whenever you pleased, with your whole family. Now, if I don't use an S2 to get to WORK, I'm not getting there. When I go on vacation, I usually sit on the jumpseat. Not the pilot jumpseat, the FA jumpseat, because the pilot jumpseats are all taken by commuters. I can't afford real tickets. No, we don't need to "look to the future" to see a seniority grab for what it is. So please, enjoy your retirement, stop by the cockpit and say hello. But leave my pass bennies out of the equation!

You make good points and there is even more to it than that.

Many Delta Connection employees also commute due to rampant base closures and openings etc. and they are S3C. So, you can have a DL retiree who now works for, say, SWA, traveling on DL retiree benefits bumping a flight crew member who is attempting to get to work to fly DL pax as a connection flight. I actually have witnessed this.

Not trying to armchair QB here, but sitting in the conga line in ATL yesterday while a severe tstorm was overhead and watching several guys "test the waters" only to end up going around was a little concerning. A few also took off with lightning hitting right on the field and windshear warnings active. Not from any particular airline. Be careful out there!
