it's got TKS for those just in case moments Rocky goes into icing conditions.

Since you actually lived this stuff Bar let's figure up his expenses and deductions for a 750 mile trip done once a month? Or is it twice Rocky?

$@!#_@%!@$. I'm being summoned.
About $24,000 down to get the loan.
Fixed costs of about $1425 per month if you don't have a partner.
Operating Costs of about $151/Hr if you get an average burn of 17 GPH

I make one trip per month 800 miles. It would typically take about 3 hours to fly that so RT would be $900 operating cost plus $1425 fixed costs for a total montly cost of $2325 to make the trip in a Bonanza. Plus the $24,000 cash outlay for the down payemnt.

If I did it 4 times per month my cost per trip would be $1262. Cost to drive is $250 RT and I get a $750 write off.

Fixed costs are:
$975 for your payment. (20 year loan/15% down/6.0%)
$200/mo Insurance
$250/mo Hanger

Variable costs are:
Fuel $97.75/hr figuring an avg 17gph burn and fuel at $5.75/gal
Engine reserves $43.00 with the 949 SMOH and a $40,000 cost to rebuild
Routine MX $10.00/hr

All of that does not consider the depreciation you would get on your taxes, but even with that it still doesn't make financial sense as a small business owner to have an airplane. It makes sense if you have the cash flow to afford it and want to have fun, but never works out to be a good financial move.

Thanks!

Yeah, I figured trip assignment still went by days of availability first. I just couldn't remember/find anything about the 15 point reduction in RAW went away or not.

Airline pilots could afford a Cessna 150......if you get an early model.
I have one! Most fun way to fly cheap! Anyone wanna go?

Default Bonanza!!!!

Oh wow...

Guess its just fate to see you'll on here talking about bonanzas. The wife and I were just last night figuring where we'd fly one if we bought one. Our search first started with c172's then quickly became 182's. Then she fell in love with the twin baron's club seating, but good lord....the gas bill was just too painful once we took a look at that. So here we are. Club seated bonanza for the win.

We spend WAAYY too much time on controller.com!!!! We have two dogs, no kids (we're gonna take a pass on that) but want the adventure of taking a weekend at the beach (east coast/outer banks), and flying to see family.

I told her outright at the start that it would make NO financial sense for us to buy an airplane. NONE. But just how someone might buy a 200k RV to drive around in, it's a lifestyle decision. They enjoy camping with family and we'll enjoy flying to see ours.

So we've started hoarding our money and God help us if that contoller website ever goes down. Haha.

I sometimes wish I was married to someone as cool as that... But my wife is way too <ahem> frugal. I kinda look at it as she is saving me from myself!

Fly safe!

That is exactly the way it is. It is an absolutely horrible investment (probably not as bad as an RV though) and by far the most expensive way to fly. If you can afford it however, then there isn't much that is more enjoyable than flying yourself around in a nice ride. Toss in a side business that requires some travel and it makes it a little more affordable because of the write offs, but it will still never be a good financial move.
