Delta and Douglas go way back.
The classic sign on the top of the jet base at Hartsfield is copied from an old Douglas sign.

You have to put up a compilation of your critiques of what loosely referred to as "Douglas engineering". It'd be worth, well, worth more than the engineering. Too bad, you didn't fly the MD-11.

Nearly no thought went into the:
  • Wing - oh we already have one of those
  • Flight Controls - worked in 1960, it will work today
  • Brakes - carry over
  • Nose Wheel Steering - see brakes
  • Engines - Gulfstream's got that worked out - just copy their data and send it in
  • Avionics - Hey what did we do with that MD-11 stuff that didn't sell? Well, use it.
  • Hydraulics - we're proud of the fact you don't need the system, but we stuck some DC-10-30 parts in there for good measure, what could go wrong?
The toilet was new, probably because they had to stick a smoke detector in there and decided to finally get rid of the honeybucket on cave wall drawings they were using. Around Douglas, that's exciting stuff! I mean, in Chariots of the Gods they thought this was an ancient astronaut. They just got the orientation wrong ... it is really supposed to be a First Officer looking through a periscope to ensure the mains are down following a hydraulic failure with all the passenger's carry ons piled on top.

It was Mayans making fun of Douglas engineering ... back in the day.

Are they still using leftover WWII DC-3 throttle knobs for the window opening latch mechanism?

Love this nugget dug up by the Dallas Morning News.

So, UA/AA's 69% is bad, but darling Southwest's 93% is good? Or is the DOJ just pandering ....

SWAPA sent pizza and hookers, I'm tellin ya...

Thank goodness we are on a new page. My eyes aren't good enough to read microfiche anymore.

It was, I guess, but in true government fashion all the infrastructure that AT&T developed, built and implemented was confiscated and given away... basically. Love our government. The best money can buy.

Does it work? Yes.
Did it need to be changed? No.

Pull knob and slide window open. Everything doesn't have to be over-engineered.

In other news, I was researching the DOJ's opposition to the AA/US merger and ran across this:

Richard Anderson on mergers, acquisitions and foreign ownership - view from the top - companies - FT.com

In this interview of Mr. Anderson just prior to our corporate closure on the NWA merger he makes a number of prognostications which have been correct, including short on fuel prices & commodities, long on New York airports and still considering what to do with Mesaba, Comair and Compass. What made his observations interesting is his support for foreign ownership of US carriers. Mr. Anderson points out that foreign entities, such as Airbus and Bombardier are already huge invested money players in US carriers. His other eye raising comment is that he is "short ... on unions." He mentioned US labor's efforts to fight cabotage are wasted since European carriers are mostly unionized also.

Hmmm.

Southwest's lobbying effort ... winning

and we do remember how US Air's other failed merger attempts ended up...

http://i.cnn.net/money/2007/02/20/ne.../parker.03.jpg

... not winning.

Does anyone know if the mad dog can be fitted with a one piece O2/smoke goggle combo like the rest of the airline has, or are we stuck with the two piece? I'm not a fan of it especially in the wake of reading the UPS6 report and the testing of the two piece vs. one piece after the accident.
